A few months ago i bought a rusty bent and dented Lionel 216 hopper on Ebay. Today I'm finishing returning it to it's former glory. It started out as a dark green with flaked paint and rust. Today it has become a Delaware & Hudson yellow and blue hopper.  After stripping and banging out dents I found that i had an old bottle of Scale coat D&H yellow which decided that this would be a D&H yellow car. High Ball Graphics decals and a custom D&H logo complete this car.

It's not clear in the picture but the under carriage and the drop doors are painted D&H blue to add a little color.. Now all I need to do is find some load inserts, if anyone has a set they'd like to sell please let me know.

The next Item I'm working on cost the huge sum of $5.00 at a train show last weekend. It's a home built ( i think) water tower. It's built with tin, brass, and copper pieces. The ladder is square cross section copper. It appears to be pretty old as the wire for the bulb on top has cloth insulation. I'm rebuilding it with a more Standard sized ladder and a water spout. I'm thinking of painting it in a New Haven Orange, White and Black paint scheme with large NH lettering on the tank sides.

Years back when money was tight, I use to search the junk bins under the tables at the shows to find cheap repairable trains, In some cases the items were perfectly fine but missing a detail or two. A stop at the parts vendor, at the hardware store and some time on the bench and I had everything running like new. Tinplate and P/W trains were easy to restore. Today such a scheme with newer complex electrically controlled trains would present a challenge but you can certainly fix and restore rolling stock.

The 216 hopper is done and ready for the layout.

To add a little color to this car I painted the end frames and the drop doors D&H blue, far from realistic but it looks nice.

Only problem I have now is I'm running out of room on my floor layout to put cars.

The water tower project is coming along. The tank has been painted orange. The lower half of the tank will be masked and the upper half painted white When finished the tank will have large orange & white NH logos on each side.

Here are more pictures of my water tower project.

Paint done and I added some guide wires to the legs. I thought the legs would be tubing, When I went to drill them I found out they are made of solid brass rod. Image1 - Copy [12)Image - Copy [12)

Now it's time fro some decals.
