K-Line Pennsy B6 Sound Problem

Does the whistle or bell button do anything? Might just be a tether problem. The chuff switch is in the engine and should be synced with the smoke. Two chuffs, two puffs per rev.

Everything works fine except for the issue I mentioned, including the whistle and bell.

I know a cam drives the chuff switch- does the same cam mechanically puff the smoke, or is it "fan-puffed" by the same switch signal?

Steve, just thought of this. I think that engine has a Railsounds/Signal Sounds switch under the tender. In Signal Sounds mode it will act like what yours is doing now.

Actually, in Signal Sounds, it won't chuff at all, only the whistle/bell will be active.  What he's describing is a loss of the chuff switch.

That model has a mechanical smoke unit, look for the chuff switch or perhaps a problem with the tether.

I believe I have a spare chuff switch kicking around- I'll tear it apart and take a look when time permits.

Pulled the engine apart tonight and was upset with what I found. There's a wire that bonds the chassis from under the motor to the front part of the engine, and it was burned up- insulation melted right off it. I have some pictures I'll try to attach, but I don't know if I'll have to resize them. You can see that there's some corrosion in a couple spots (got wet?); the screw that holds the chuff switch bracket on is so corroded I couldn't budge it. Rather than breaking the screw off or slipping and ruining something else, I'm just going to leave it. I don't know how the electronics work on these, but there was obviously a lot of current running through that wire. I replaced it with a heavier gauge. Haven't tried to run the engine yet- hope I didn't pinch a wire

Oh My!  I have a couple of these engines that I have never taken out of the box as of yet.  I think I will and open them up to see if this is a systemic issue with these Locomotives.
