It sure is Tom, actually this was my first time at this great train watching spot and I lived in KC all my life. While I was there snapping photos, a young couple pulled in to the parking lot with there their son, set up lawn chairs and picnic basket for a day of train watching. Great train watching spot for sure!

KC: BBQ - pshaw!

Being born and raised in KC during the 1950's and 1960's, the family traditions were tenderloins at The Tenderloin Grill over on Southwest Blvd, and Italian steak sandwiches at the Paul Bunyan Drive In (was it at 18th and Armour in KCKC?).  Even after moving away and getting married, when in KC, it was ALWAYS a "must" to hit The Tenderloin Grill and have a tenderloin sandwich, and maybe also a pig snoot sandwich.  This was a tradition of the wife and I for decades. Haven't been to KC in about 10 years, so it's been that long since I've had a delicious tenderloin sandwich at the Tenderloin Grill. Paul Bunyan's is gone, but there are still some great Italian sandwiches available if you look.

Mmmm. Planning on being in KC this coming October to visit with the last of my aunts from my mom's side... gettin' pumped already to have a tenderloin and an Italian steak while there!!

Yup, the Tenderlion Grill and Paul's Drive In is still open, been there many times. If anyone is visiting KC, a must stop of the many, many BBQ joints is Joe's Kansas City BBQ in KCK, recommended by Anthony Bourdain as on of the places to visit before you die! Grab you some BBQ or a Tenderlion or both and go do some train watching in the west bottoms!

Memory isn't as good these days, but wasn't Paul Bunyan's at about 34th-36th & State Ave? If that wasn't Paul Bunyans, anyone remember the name of that place? I think there is still a Paul's at 10th & Kansas Ave (KCK) or close to that anyway and also one near 105th & Blue Ridge (KCMO). Wimpy's at 76th & Troost was a favorite of mine too. There were many others I have forgotten... Kind of wish I would have taken pictures of a lot of places that are now gone, not just Drive Ins, but other things as well. Lots of changes in KC since I was a kid in the '50s & early '60s.

Very few of those places left these days, it's all McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, etc. Kind of sad.

I believe Dagwood's on SW Blvd is still there and they used to have a giant tenderloin years ago. It is near Strasser Hardware, just south of it a little.

I assumed this thread was about a radio station at 710 AM!

Jon

Memory jog!!....

710 AM: WHB "World's Happiest Broadcasters"!!!  They were the Top 40 station throughout the 60's (maybe the 50's too?).  Cut my rock n' roll teeth listening to WHB!  When I started playing bass guitar (age 13 or 14, I think?), I would listen to the bass lines in the songs, and those I really liked, tried to memorize the line and learn it... OR... bought the record and wore it out by learning the bass line and then playing along with the record.  Here it is some 50+ years later... and I still do that... only digital now! Upside: In retrospect I now see that one really broadens their musical horizon doing that, for you end up learning lots of different approaches to music from professional and very accomplished musicians.  It paid off for me: I became a paid musician when I was 15 years old!

This thread:

Been a really fun thread... and I would be remiss to not mention that the pics in the OP are really great! Spent many an hour at SF Jct in KC!

RTR12, You may be thinking about Peters Drive-In, it was located around 32nd and State Ave and was a regular hang out for the guys with the hot rods back in the 60's and 70's. Paul's is on 10th and Osage and is still operating,  Dagwood's is also still open.

You are correct, it was Peter's Drive In that was on State Ave. You have jolted the old memory (which ain't what it used to be ). I haven't been to that part of town since the early '70s when Indian Springs was still new. I think they have just torn that down in the last years or two as well, and are still arguing over what to do with the property.
