The damage consists of paint chips at the end of the dark state green clerestory roofs and the light state green ends above the vestibules. It is relatively minor, but the zinc chromate primer can clearly be seen on the roof ends of all the cars, except one end of the New Haven car and the end of the observation car. Apparently this damage was caused by inserting the foam protectors while the paint was still tacky. Upon removal, some small paint chips subsequently pulled away.

I'm so sorry to hear about this, Art!  What a long wait it has been, just to end in dissapiontment.  Unfortunately I know the feeling all too well, after seeing a deep scratch on the pilot deck of my new Blue Comet.  My LHS was quick and it was replaced without issue.  Keep your chin up, at least you will get your money back AND the Armored set is still on the way!

NO "buyer's remorse", and overnight, I have decided to keep them afterall. Had a nice conversation with Jeff Strank, one of Mike Wolf's long-time associates regarding this issue. He assured me he would make Mike aware of this problem and they would take steps for future prevention. I asked him if he could supply me with some paint chips, in lieu of using their two-part paint, and he stated they could.

I believe I can get some custom mixed gloss enamel that should match both the light green and the dark green finish. The touch-up painting will not be a perfect solution, but at least I will have these unique cars.

RE: Replacement

IF there were extra sets, they very well might have the same issues.

Good to hear you are keeping them. I think you would have ended up with return remorse.

When I purchased my 1st State Set I thought they were to large for the accessories on my layout and they are: but I have come to like them. Down the road I think you will become use to there "Cumbersome Size".

Too bad they can not get you a perfect set.

They are truly unique, and if the really never make them again, I think you would be sorry you let them go.

Good to hear it worked out, sir.

Okay here is the deal.  Mike Wolf pays a nice guy to soothe Art's feelings.  Thirty years ago, Mike would have repainted the cars for Art. This issue is never-ending.  It's kinda like my Ravens' season tickets...I get ****ed off cuz the guy behind me keeps spilling his beer on me during his drunken stupers at the games.  I keep my mouth shut and suffer thru it cuz I know there are 15,000 on a waiting list ready to snatch up my tickets. I conclude, therefore, that we deserve every lousy paint job and every defect they can get away with...SAD!!!

Art, What did MTH say about the refund issue you proposed in the beginning, just wondering cause like the showroom cars and the brute, not many out there, and just wanted to see if they really stand behind there issues to make the customer happy cause its not like the cost of the cars are a bargin. I personally think they should replace them for that price, not touch them up cause when you buy new for top dollar you expect the best. just my opinion .

Let me be clear: I stated up front that I had changed my mind BEFORE Jeff had a chance to respond either way about the refund.

The procedure would have been for me to return them to MTH, they in turn would credit the seller's account, and the seller would issue the refund. Whether or not they would cover the shipping ($75-80) is unknown.

The areas to be touched up are quite small, and once I have an accurate color match, it should be very easy to accomplish.
