All of my engines have the "KTM" gearboxes, some with a friction spherical bearing worm shaft and some with a ball bearing worm shaft. What lubricant should be used with these? (I have used Labelle thick oil, silicon based grease, and lubriplate, and have never had any problems.) The reason I am posting this question is that lubriplate is good for gears in mesh, but the top of the gearbox where the worm and its bearings are located are more properly lubricated with oil, especially the boxes with ball bearings. What do others use, and what is/was recommended by KTM? I did notice that light oils have a tendency to leak around the driving axle. The worm and bearings at the top of the box rely on "splash" lubrication, and there is no "splash" lube of the bearings if lubriplate is used. Also, any lubricant has to be plastic compatible as the intermediate gear in most of my boxes is evidently "Celcon" or something similar.....

I use Tamiya light grease that comes in a small tube. It is soft, plastic compatible and has been injected in all my KTM/USH gearboxes as a replacement for the awful and dry crud that you normally find there. I also tend to use the same thing for Sunset gearboxes when I have to take one apart.

 

However, I have no idea if it is good long term for the gears or how it performs under heavy stress and extended running sessions.

We actually have a proving ground here.  The Museum in Balboa Park has a 2-rail O Scale layout that must, by contract with the city, run continuously eight hours a day, six days a week. I have nothing to do with the running, but I fix the gears and bearings when they wear out.

 

I have, for about two decades, used white lithium grease on all gearboxes.  We get incredibly good service on most styles of gearboxes, and when the axle gears finally give up, there is still a coating of grease on those little gear teeth nubs.

 

Lionel knew about that grease in the 1940's.  They supplied it in a little tube.

 

I personally replace USH gearboxes with the NWSL Mod O.6.  My reasons have more to do with appearance and reducing the number of gears, but that USH idler gear is a weak point.  We get thousands of actual hours on NWSL gears - often outlasting motors three-to-one.
