I’d have to agree with my buddy Pete on this one,....so will I be sticking to the older ones,.....the Oddesy L2a Mohawks have to be their finest hour IMO,.....I have two, and haven’t touched a single thing on them, sans cab renumbering on one locomotive,...

3rd vote for the previous version. I must admit. I did some serious upgrading/detailing when I painted the driver tires on mine

These are definitely the pinnacle of Korean Lionel, and..... of course, you get that Pittman motor thats so popular on those Harmon shops threads

( what a fabulous smokebox color!)

Definitely no changes wanted in the paint from the previously issued L2a's.

2770. I always see this one come and go on Ebay, and most of the time a big price to it to($900-$1200 or so). Should pop that in NYC Classics, because it definitely is. I'll have to see if I can find one, or talk to my dealer to see if he can.

2770 is a good one. TMCC with RS5 and a Pittman. They used go for half that amount or less. Maybe hold off until the shows start up again.

FWIW you can run all of the Mohawks together. Just set the Legacy ones to TMCC. One train show had four different L2s lashed up.

To touch further on the bay, there are the two, 2793, and 2770 on there. 2793 is listed as new, $1600, and 2770 is listed as used, $1000(rounding up a dollar on both). Ironically the same seller. He has straight buy on 2793, and bid on 2770. Sorry, I don't think so. I think this is one of those no buy moments. I know someone had mentioned a seller who buys and resells items for a higher amount. I believe that is the case with 6005 Niagara, priced at $2500. That may also be the same seller as well, forgot to click when I was looking.

Dave, FYI, shortly after the Legacy versions came out they were being blown out in the $8-900 range and then later for around $750. Just a little perspective. All of the Mohawks including the first one with RS4 share identical details save lettering. The RS4 has two chuffs. The rest have 4 chuffs and synchronized smoke. The TMCC engines have Pittmans, the Legacy have Canons. Current ebay prices are nuts.

Best option is probably the TMCC version and upgrade it to 4 chuffs. Much better driveline on that one, if you can live without whistle steam.

Yeah Pete, they're a little out of control there on price, that much is certain. As Peter(Putnam Division) had said at York about a 1950's set, "someone is trying to win the lottery". Also, the Niagara I mentioned above is the same seller as the Mohawks. See, I wasn't letting my eyesight go.

What stinks is some months back in 2020, I did happen to find a 6005 Niagara in one of the online stores that is based here in NJ. Well, at the time I had other things pressing otherwise I would have gone for it. In retrospect though, I am happy with my VL 6023 Niagara and my upgraded CCII one. That's all I need of those.

Here is a list of the painted L2a Mohawks

38053, Cab 2793, RS4, Odyssey

11114, Cab 2795, RS5, Odyssey (Empire Builder Set)

11105, Cab 2770, RS5, Odyssey

11141, Cab 2791, Legacy

11412, Cab 2797, Legacy (Water Level Set)

It was the Water Level sets that many dealers were offering as set breakups and selling at attractive prices. This before Lionel’s MAP pricing went into effect.

This is the sister engine to the separate sale 2770, its also a gem, and comes with a different whistle tone than the 2770.

Now....if Lionel was smart. They'd get their hands on that MTH L3-4 tooling.

That would be something. I know some time ago someone had suggested(maybe Don) about Lionel bringing back an L3. I myself would love to see one or more with those "elephant ears" smoke lifters or whatever people like to call them. Yeah they block viewing the builder's plate, but I just love them.

I was lucky to find 2797 on eBay a while ago, got the caboose and the Beacon Oil tank car. Haven't been able to get the Michigan Central boxcar or the coal hoppers. Those have never turned up in any of my searches.

I did get really lucky getting 2793 from Grysboski's(I hope I spelled it right) recently. I think February I finally nailed it down.

A few years back, maybe 2018 eBay did have 2791 for about a hot minute in one of my searches. That thing was gone so fast. Only reason I remember it was because I had to go on to Lionel's site to compare the catalog to make sure which one it was. By the next day or so it was gone.

It would be interesting to see what future versions of the Mohawks come out, but if Lionel doesn't produce any other Mohawks, what will all of our L2's do with all the old L3's? Ask them to be upgraded? Or converted to L2's, lol.

Say friends!!!....tired of the same ol same ol Mohawk??.....well,.....build your own!!...😆😆. ....get a L3a shell, and a L2a chassis, and voila!...class L2d Mohawk,...actually, I think I did post this pic up on Skip’s cool NYC classics thread,...😉

What is this abomination? Actually, that looks dang cool. Looks like an added coal load to it to Pat. Did you add some extra coal in there, or is that a modified old tender switch to confuse us?

Actually Dave, this is a pretty good representation of a class L2d Mohawk ....complete with Elesco feedwater, and the correct plumbing ( most of it) ...the tender is an ex-Kline B&A Berk shell that’s actually darn near spot on for this class of Mohawk,....and of course I’ve tuned up the coal pile,....

Pat

It looks fantastic Pat. Funny thing I always do when looking on eBay, I think about picking up another #3000 & #3005 for modifications.

Keep on the lookout for these 3rd Rails too. Before the pandemic you could find them small money, less than what most Lionel L3s are priced at today and they run well with no upgrades needed.

Never see any 3rd Rail NYC stuff on eBay. What is the old saying, "sometimes the good stuff is hard to find"? What can you do, look, look, and look some more I suppose.

Train show/swap meets are the best for 18009/18064.....I usually can find them for little money, especially if the grease is dried up and the locomotive won’t move,...which is par for the course on these,....if it won’t move, sometimes the seller will lowball it himself to unload it,....got quite a few that way,.....some won’t deal and rather take it back home to fix it themselves, but most just want the stuff gone,.....
