I live just outside out Chattanooga and was witness to a 3 engine pull with a consist of all freight cars. One of the engines was CSX, pretty common I guess, another one I just plain missed, but the one that caught my attention was a maroon and gray "Lackawanna". That's all I saw as I was so stunned to see a real Lackawanna paint job pass just feet from my car's bumper! It looked sort of like a U boat, maybe a U25 with a somewhat short and stubby front end.

Does anyone know what I just saw? I though they were loooong out of business and all their engines would have been long ago scrapped or repainted! Thanks!

Yes, and the other 19. NS is not the only railroad to do this. Amtrak, UP, CSX, CP et. al. all have "heritage" units. Check this link to find out where they are.

Thanks Chris, that was possibly the coolest train moment I've ever had, seeing a paint scheme to a livery that I loved as a kid, but never saw in real life til now! I guess I'll keep my camera handy when I hit that crossing again!

If you check out the "Grab Bag" video that Virtual Railfan posts every day or two on their YouTube page, you'll generally see several of the NS heritage units in action on trains.

You can also go to heritageunits.com to see the latest reported location of the NS, UP, Amtrak, and other special or heritage units - or just units still wearing original paint, like Santa Fe or BN units on BNSF.

It really is a cool paint scheme.

I lived all my life here in NJ, so I really enjoy all of Norfolk Southern's heritage units. Clicking on the thumbnail images at NS's website ... NORFOLK SOUTHERN'S HERITAGE LOCOMOTIVES ... will give clear photos.

BTW, love the photo of you and your grandson.

Thanks for the link, I totally enjoyed seeing all those engines in full size, color, and detail. The Jersey Central was an especially stunning photo!

And as for my grandson, well.. he's busy 13 yr old right now, trying to negotiate a deal with a seller for a Lionel Coin Bank! He didn't fall too far from that tree
