Trying to create lash with Lionel Legacy F3 SF A(powered),B(powered),A(non powered. Using Legacy Cab2. Have train created and all three units run down the track, horn blows and directions change as expected. Problem is the icons that should appear on the numerical keyboard are not there to control smoke, tower com, etc. When I disconnect the units they work independently as they should and icons appear on key board. I have had this same train built before and everything worked fine. What am I overlooking here? Pulling large clumps of hair out of my head over this. Thanks in advance for your help!

Bobby,

Here is what I would do. I would assign each unit the same number. The B unit will need to be placed on the track so it starts up in the same direction as the powered A. The non powered a should have its front coupler which faces to the rear of the lashup working but check it out when you begin to run. Address the engine as the number you gave all three units.

When you program the train as you had started to do make sure you have "LEGACY" as the control system. That should correct the displays

  Good luck

Ok JohnB, will do. Two questions: 1.) How do I know I am using Legacy system? Using Legacy Base with Cab2 controller. Can system switch out of Legacy automatically. Sorry but I am kind of new to this? 2.) Why is it necessary to have all three units with same id#? When you build the train you move each unit into the box in the middle, enter it’s  individual id #,press add and then move the next unit into box and add it. After adding all units you then peas set. Does this all sound right?

Bobby,

I am doing this from memory as my Legacy system is at the train club I belong to. When you set up a Legacy engine you first set the ID #. I recently set up a AA set of E8 engines which should work the same as your F3s as there is one powered and one non powered. After assigning both the same ID number go into info this is where you can name your engine, assign a road number , select diesel, steam or switcher, control type TMCC, Cab-1, Legacy. Or if your engines have a orange module that will upload all the correct settings. When you set up a train in Legacy you have to do the settings manual but you can avoid that step if you set up the two A units using the same number as wel as the B unit then run them as a engine not a train. Look at it this way you only have ten train IDs but you have 99 engine IDs. Better to save the train IDs when setting up steam lash ups or mixed diesel lash ups not all F3s. The only time I use a train ID for diesels is when I want the rear unit to be reversed in the lash up. If your F AA units are like my E8s they were made to use the same ID and the auto couplers will work correctly front and rear. All you are doing different is adding a B unit which has no front so if it starts in reverse turn it around physically and it should be fine. Then address your 3 unit engine as engine # whatever and have fun.

Well here is what I did and here are the results. I reloaded the orange memory models for both the A (powered unit) and B (powered unit) and the rebuilt the train. The whole the worked perfectly. The Icons reappeared. All functions worked as expected for about 5 mins. Then the sound went away. No rail sounds, no tower com, no horn but icons were still present. The smoke feature was working. Just no sound. Next I just turned everything off, went down stairs and got a glass of wine. Sorry to be such a bother but you guys are my best resource. What next? Thanks for all your help!
