I got an ambulance, police car, and school bus with appropriately blinking LED's from the vendor in the Orange Hall at York that specializes in them. They hook directly to my accessory terminals and look great. Thinking about one or two more when I visit York again next fall. (unless he is at Allentown)

Good topic. Can any of these folks provide a modern fire engine, that would replace the older fire engine, n the MTH Firehouse?

I have seen these at many WNY train shows. Very impressive cars, school buses, and emergency vehicles.

I did an Ecto one earlier this year, posted info on here January 1, search for ecto 1. It was a lot of fun, and wasn't too hard. I think I even posted a link to the prewired LEDs...

Jack Pearce usually has a bunch of these at the York Show.

Curious as to what is the average cost of one of these ?.  They must be a great addition to any layout.

I've got a bunch of vehicles I'd to put lights on ( I have a couple emergency light kits ) but haven't tried to install them yet. I'm not real handy so I'm kind of intimidated. I'm glad I got some names of guys that can install so if I have problems I can still have someone to put lights in my vehicles. Thanks for this post!!

Just as an example, (and I don't buy in any quantity), the Ecto 1 that I did I have $10 into. There are 4 LEDs in it-
The one I'm working on now will have either 6 or 8 in the emergency light bars, and a color changing one inside the car that cycles from Red to Green to Blue. I thought it would be a cool detail.

Not that someone has asked, but I wouldn't have any idea what would be my break even cost for time. I probably have a good four hours into each mod, and that's for this very basic car. I don't have my latest build even back together to dry fit and I have 4 hours in it, more complex. The Law Enforcement cars posted have some great lighting effects, and that HAS to be a lot of wire to keep trimmed and tucked away! Hats Off!

Even if your not handy, I would encourage you to pick up a practise car and give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? Have fun with it- after all, they're just toys.

Hi ROZY 205

rogerpete has given a pretty good idea of how it's basically done.  The examples that I have posted above are a little more complex which determines the price I charge.  The models are completely disassembled which is much more difficult than one would imagine.  Almost all the small parts (antennas, spotlights, light bars, push bars, headlight and tail light lenses, etc.) must be removed to avoid damaging these delicate parts during the installation of the LED’s.  Removal is most often complicated by the fact these delicate parts are glued into place at the factory during assembly.  The bezels for the headlights and tail lights must be drilled out to accommodate installation of the LED’s.  If additional LED’s are requested, further modifications must be made to the model to make this happen.  The light bar must be modified to accept the LED’s and a “Wiring Harness” for the circuit that makes the flash pattern.  Ultimately, everything is hidden inside the model and only two wires that exit beneath the model, which are used to power the model, are visible.  You can scroll through this thread and I have posted several examples of my work, most of which were custom built for forum members.  Perhaps, if they don’t mind, you could contact the member that I custom built models for and see if they think it was worth the expense.  BTW, the two Alabama State Trooper Tahoe's that have the "General Lee" on a traffic stop were models that I custom built for LIONLMAN.  The post is a few posts before this one.  I'm currently in the process of building another Alabama State Trooper patrol unit for LIONLMAN.  This one will be a FORD Crown Victoria.  If you would like to contact me, please hit my email located in my profile.

Here is another one I did a while ago.  This one is an Ohio State Highway Patrol unit.  I model the Norfolk Southern in a fictitious location somewhere along the Ohio/Pennsylvania border which allows me to use either Pennsylvania State Police units or Ohio State Highway Patrol units.    I like em’ both!

How about AMTRAK Police.  Someone's got to keep those railfans off of the tracks.   This was one of my first custom builds that I did for my layout.

$1 store flashing keychain/ pocket clip / bicycle / dog stopsign shaped saftey reflector thingies & a disc players drawer's limit switch nub for on at a pen sized hole out the rear. The bump of it beyond the roof isn't much more than a rivets worth and actuates well.(so close to flush you can't see it here). LED are board mounted. The disc player drawer motor is driving it.  I need to add a regulation and tap off the rails someday.

I'm no expert at this, but I'm having fun.

There is some nice work on display here! I just wish one of the manufacturers would make a modern ambulance to add to the mix. 

Here's one another one I just finished for LIONLMAN.   It's an Alabama State Trooper Ford Crown Vic.  It will be a nice addition to the two Alabama State Trooper Chevy Tahoe's I previously custom built for him.

You may already be aware, but Menards has this ambulance that is more modern.  I have it hooked up through a relay to cycle off n on.  Have to run at around 4.5vdc.

The menards ambulance is nice- but I don't think they sell it online anymore. You will have to search elsewhere. I have one, i didn't hook it up to a relay, but I did solder in a few leads and run it off a buck converter. You're right- its a 4.5 vdc unit.

I have been hoping that Menards would put out some police/fire/rescue vehicles with LED flashers.  I bought an Ambulance on flat car from them a while ago but the lighting scheme was underwhelming.  I do like the F-150 on flat car with lit headlights and taillights

I got the 1/43 General Lee on eBay in August 2015.
