I built my layout to go around the room so I wouldn't loose my whole basement to just trains.  (a good idea but not practical for everyone else)  I had to make 2 lift outs so that family traffic to the laundry and workshop is usually unimpaired.  I made a shroud for the furnace that resembles a station.  It's on rollers to get access and the trains can go behind it.  The wall painting idea was a first for me but I thought ...Why not?  I can always paint over in a basement.  072 for the two upper lines and 031 for the lower little town area.  Recessed lights in the low ceiling look good when dimmed with lighted passenger cars running.
