Kinda getting frustrated with Lionel at this point...  Built my 5 year old a 5x9 ft layout and we exclusively use lionchief locos.  After about 6 months after purchasing the orange remote, I noticed one day the batteries were getting uncomfortably hot.  Unscrewed the battery tray cover, and sustained a burn to my hand taking out the AAA batteries.  One was so hot it was bubbling.

Fast forward to today, and the SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN with the new controller...

Am I just super unlucky, or does Lionel have a defective product?

Wow!  Henning's has sold a bunch of these, and I even have a couple.  They hang around for months with batteries in them, I've never had anything like that happen.  That sounds like bad batteries and not the remote.  Even if you short an alkaline battery, it shouldn't get hot enough to start bubbling.

What brand are these batteries?

Had it happen with Kirkland (costco) and energizer.

I understand the Kirkland (aka Duracell), but I've had really good luck with the Energizer batteries, that's what I use in most of my stuff if I'm not using rechargeable batteries.

Looking at the battery box design in the Universal Remote, it looks close to impossible to short the batteries, the only thing that could cause something like that.  That's the only external force that could cause batteries to overheat, and usually they don't go too crazy.  I'm assuming the remote was working, so it can't have an internal short and still function.
