I am in the process of having NCE decoders along with the TCS keep alive put into a few of my Overland diesels.   The person whom is doing this has talked to me about upgrading all the lights to LEDs.  Now I know a few people that have had this person do installs for them, and are highly satisfied with the work done, but I'm still kind of on the fence about the LED lighting.  The cost per LED is $8 to $9, and I would like some feedback from anybody on this forum who may have had this done, as to their opinion, one way or the other.   I know bulbs will burn out, and LEDs are much better, but I don't know if this is an up sell, or if this would is a good idea.    Some input would be appreciated.  Thanks to all in advance.......

I hope that's an installed price!  LED's are relatively inexpensive and I use them in everything.  I like the color of the Miniatronics Yelloglo 3mm and they are about 2 bucks each and come with resistors.  Mounting them in the stacked diesel lights requires a bit of ingenuity as you need to fashion a bracket to hold them in place so 8 bucks installed is a good price.

I use former sponsor Model Train software 3mm LED [abeit modified]. I will use TWO 3mm LEd's per board [the mfg says his board can handle 6 led's at once . The led's with the driver board are only $2.25 ea! you may even ask him to add the second led to his board.

$8-9 for just an led without a driver board is ridiculously expensive , even for those nano led's!

If the person is wiring the LED's, the price isn't all that excessive, you're talking custom work.  Put another way, if you bring me your locomotive and want LED headlights installed, you'll certainly pay at least that much for me to do the work.  The actual LED bulb and associated components are incidental, it's the labor and time that costs for that installation.

Well guys, thank you all for your input on this.   I talked to my installer this morning, and the LEDs are $4.50 each, (originally quoted at the $8-9 each price) , and will be the correct color.    He tells me that my diesels can have the bug boards lit, also, as they have lighting in them.   I was unaware of this, I knew some newer Overlands had number boards lit, which is kind of neat.   He is just getting started on my units, and I think I will have him set the number boards up as a separate function.    Thanks again........
