I have a Lionel Legacy NYC GP7 from 2007 (item number 6-28561).  The sounds started sounding grabbed and then only static.  I assumed it maybe a speaker issue so I order correct replacement and installed it tonight.  I still only get static.  Everything else runs and works as it should.

Any suggestions where  to look next?

Thanks for the help,

Don

This has first generation modular electronics. Besides cleaning the pot you could pull the boards and reseat. It also has chips in the audio board but you would need a tool to pull those out. The boards look identical to TMCC modular and the audio power board is in fact the same. If none of this helps you could actually swap out the two audio boards for their TMCC look a-likes (RS4 or RS5) to determine if a board is bad.

Pete,

I originally thought so too, because it's early Legacy, but I found the wiring diagram.  It's not modular:

If I'm reading this correctly there's not a typical modular motherboard and so no boards to pull and reseat.  Connectors yes; boards no.

Let's hope it's a dirty pot.

Mike, here is the RS 5.5 board that is in that engine. Maybe the motherboard is new but the boards that plug into are all early legacy. R4LC, Audio power board and this Railsounds board.

Thanks Pete for the clarification!

Here's what's clearly not obvious in the documentation for this engine: Unlike every other wiring diagram I've ever seen from Lionel, e.g. those in Supplements 1 - 47, this one doesn't show that the motherboard has other boards plugged into it (although the term "motherboard" would lead one to believe that it does so I should have assumed so).

Before I posted I did try to locate the motherboard itself in the Lionel parts system in order to add more light, only to find that it's not actually in the system.

Lastly I checked Rod's summary of motherboards and didn't find it there either:

It just goes to show that posts in this forum, and people like you on it, are critical at times for determining the real answer to many questions, especially when the formal documentation occasionally comes up a little short.
