Thanks to Mario for making this a real easy conversion. I will weather them up by the weekend (I hope). I won't mess with extending the handrails, besides I don't think they are totally correct for a GP7 (I think Atlas got it right on theirs).

I think Atlas O includes an add on scale pilot with their locomotives.

Wouldn't mind finding another one of these. I've had the 8510 since 2008 but never really ran it that much. I found the 8512 at York for like $225. The GP9 they made with the Trainphone setup was bonkers priced.

I have a set of NYC ones too, powered and dummy. I really don't want to try painting those safety stripe pilots though! Unless you have a good masking tape recommendation.

Is this the pilot paint job you are talking about? Have had some success duplicating this either with Microscale striping sets for another diesel or having someone such a RailGraphics print them up. The cost easily overcomes the mental anguish of attempting them a stripe at a time!

I have the same issue with my Santa Fe Zebra. I think I MIGHT touch it by hand, then weathering the heck out of the pilots and call it close enough.

Thanks a lot guys. I think I am mostly caught up with diesel projects for now....

Cough... ahem... FA-2s... They're coming.

Norm finally getting to this. Great job. The video was great. You layout, the word that comes to mind is wow!

How soon? getting ready to drop order . Also for the GP7/9 mounts that are full length. You need to Noch them in order for them to fit.

No notching should be necessary...

L-GP7_9-C Rev3a

I do tend to make them just a little tall (long?) to sanding the bottom might be needed, but that's because I want a tight fit.

- Mario

PS - Don't hold your breath for the FA pilots; they're going to have to be cast instead of printed.

Dummy me. I noched them to fit.

No, your not a dummy!

I recently changed the design so you won't have to.

But Wait and that's not all. Here are the other issues:

Lionel did another "cookie cutter" run of the GP9 by applying most of the details for the other road names to the PRR unit. Including and incorrect "GP9 name plate" that would be found on western roads a la CB&Q.

The fuel tank design was incorrect for the numbers on the Lionel GP9. The fuel tank was a design change that started with the PRR's third order of GP9's with #7105. Those design changes including redesigned fuel tank skirting including a revised Fuel filler spout arrangement and a recontourd fuel tank body. Both were redesigned to help eliminate spilled diesel fuel being trapped on the top of the fuel tank.

There is too much "air" between the air tanks and the underbody. Air tanks are HEAVY and need support. An easy fix but for the locos price point it's a detail that should NOT have happened!

Lionel forgot to drop the Trainphone antenna end on the long hood and had an incorrect stubby short hood drop down which also was attached to the removable access pannel on the roof. As time goes by I think many in the used market will see scratched in that area of the short hood.

Even if you "fixed" the Fuel tank filler and skirting issue on these Lionel PRR units and remove that incorrect "builder's plate" you still have that "crew talk" programmed in the electronics that state the units factory road number!

IMHO, Get either the the MTH Ps2 version or the latest PS3 Railking version and make detailed corrections before wasting $$ on the Lionel unit.

Bummer that Lionel didn't do their research on this unit. And they were on a roll too!

Looks good. I just noticed that the rivets didn't come out on my batch. Also did a test fit using the Atlas GP35 mount on the Atlas SD 40. With some minor changes they will work.  Will send email later when finished.  Happy Thanksgiving.

You're right, and I just made them taller, and they should be more noticeable.

Happy Thanksgiving!
