Legacy PRR K 4 going silent

Have you tried a battery in it to maintain the sound over troublesome areas?

I would install GunrunnerJohn's YLB (Your Last Battery)  It will help prevent the sound drop out on switches and other power losses in the tender.

Depending on the exact need, YLB with the RS lite board connector or with the 9volt connector.

thanks the battery did the trick. I assumed the battery was a thing of the past and not an option on legacy locos. an interesting thing though if you put the battery in the tray on top of the speakers that looks like its designed for it you cannot put the tender shell back on as the screws that hold the coal load are in the way.  

Recent models have omitted the 9V battery cable, but the RS-Lite board still has a battery connector.  That's the reason I created the second YLB model.  YLB - RailSounds Battery Replacement (RS-Lite)

thanks.  the K4 has a 9volt battery clip but have not opened the RS-11 yet. is there another connection used to charge the battery replacement unit? 

Lionel Railsounds typically use non rechargable batteries. There is no on board way to recharge batteries. They typically last about ten years though.

The YLB I pointed to has one wire connected to the center roller.  That's how it charges whenever it has track power.

I've had Duracells leak after a couple years BEFORE they go out of date or charge. Very annoying, but not in an engine yet. I took all the non rechargeable batteries out and am just relying on the YLBs when desired. I find the Energizers good so far and even better the Energizer Lithium batteries. Expensive though, but worth it if the item you put them in is seldom checked or expensive.
