Yes, you can.
Just to add, when you do use a second or more remotes, since the information is stored in the base, all the information is immediately available on all remotes.

I enjoy both DCS and Legacy but I think that's one feature that Legacy has that I appreciate over cloning a DCS remote. Of course with a second DCS remote you can have more engines on the layout so there is a trade off.

Which brings up an interesting question.
If Lionel Legacy/TMCC can have 1-98 + 99 engines in it's memory?
How many can a MTH- DCS Remote have in it's memory?
I couldn't imagine having a layout that could fit 98 engines on it at the same time... let alone owning more than 98 engines at one time?

I think the only reason for the base for the auxiliary remote is battery charging.

Next time you're in the Sanford, Florida area, stop by and I'll show you one with 107 engines, each on its own siding that doesn't blocking any of the 3 mainlines and 2 subway routes. 
The layout is medium-sized, yet has 3 levels (plus a trolly line on a 4th level), 100+ switch tracks and almost 50 accessories, and consumes a 21' X 13' room, plus an L-shaped walk-in closet.
It supports DCS and Legacy, both with remotes and WiFi apps.
