LEGACY remote heating up when on base

Normal, which is why I never leave the remote on the command base. Notice that the command base gets warm without the remote on it, it's the internal electronics that are creating the heat, not the charging of the remote.

I charge mine in a #993 charging base, that doesn't heat the remote up.

I never use the base for storage and recharging.  Have a battery charger and two sets of rechargeable batteries.  After each session, I remove center battery from CAB 2 and then insert it at next running session.  There is always a fully charged set available, so I have an immediate replacement.  Works like a charm, never have a dead set of batteries and there is no power going to the Base.

Thank you both for your guidance. I will now do the following:

1. I will not keep the remote on the base anymore.
2. I will continue to use regular batteries, but I will take the batteries out of the remote when I'm not running it.
3. I will monitor the base to see if it is gets warm on its own when I have track power on.

Hopefully that should do the trick.

Suggestion by Mike Reagan (some time ago):  When not in use, Turn over the CAB2 (Face down) in the Base!

The base gets warm after a spell, but that's normal.  There's a significant amount of electronics in there, and it's normal for it to get somewhat warm.  Look at the size of the power brick, that power has to go somewhere.

As others have said, Don’t use the 990 base for charging.  Yes they get.very hot and the charging circuit are prone to failure.  Get the 993 add on remote and charging base.  Doesn’t get hot at all.  Use that for charging your cab2 remotes

I use an external charger for the batteries or just regular alkaline ones. 
The charger in the base is not the best, heats up and sometimes does not work correctly. Never sent mine back to fix something that really was not broken, just not dependable. 

Regardless, I leave the cab-2 only in the base when not in use. 

As suggested by many of you, I have started keeping the remote off the base whenever I run trains. I only keep it on the base when the layout is not powered. This approach seems to be working.

Sorry guys but I disagree with the hysteria on the base.  I always keep it on the base and have never disabled the charging circuit. Lionel fixed that issue years ago.  It has always worked fine.  My entire layout is powered off when not in use.

Sean, it's a fact that with the Legacy command base powered and the remote in the cradle, the remote gets quite warm.  Obviously, when the command base is not powered that won't happen.  The issue is when you are leaving it there to charge, it does get very warm.
