I’m not a Southern expert by any stretch, but the green looks to be fairly consistent with a Southern FM I have from years ago. The smoke box and fire box are no bueno.  I can’t comment on the red.  

But for the color fumbles, these are very nice models. I’ve been trying to unsee the T&P version, but it’s in a class by itself.....

I’d second that,...that describes it to a tee,....neither am I a Southern expert, but my first impression is toy like at best, the T&P is straight up an abomination,...

Here's a photo I hope will show the difference in the green between the ten wheeler and the Crescent Limited Pacific.  Although you cannot appreciate it from the photo, the red on the cab roof and tender deck are a little darker on the ten wheeler as compared  to the Pacific.

Neal, I stand corrected. In view of this photo, I think the green from my Southern FM more closely matches the darker green of your Pacific. Again, I’m no Southern expert at all.

Well, with that better comparison, I would say that the Ten Wheeler is a little late for Saint Patrick's Day. It needs to be a little darker on that green, otherwise Leprechauns will be jumping about looking for their pots of gold. Just did a search on the actual engine, of course all the photos of the real deal are in black & white. I did see an HO version from 1977 of it which matches the Pacific's colors to a T. I guess maybe we should get Doc Brown to go back to 1977, get the color and come back to the future!

  Somehow my dealer said I ordered a Southern, even though I don't remember doing so and since I didn't want to stick him with it, I took it.

  Since most of the Southern 4-6-0s were small locomotives I was going to renumber it anyway, as 947 is WAY wrong.  See the link  of one of the few larger 4-6-0s Southern had (actually subsidiary  Georgia Southern and Florida).  Since K4 Supply now has Southern decals readily available, I'm going for a total repaint with Scalecoat Southern green, green cab roof (always lots of controversy over the red roof), graphite smokebox and a black tender deck.  Collectability is out the window, while I'm not a rivet counter I want something that is at least close.

Kudos to Mr. Muffins as his look 1000% better.

My days of preordering are almost if not already ending.  Can't stomach all the problems.

Gray, collectability is subjective. No matter what, it boils down to what you yourself like. I doubt any of us will have any resale value put forth to a great majority of what we own. Unless we have a prized "golden goose" that no one else has, it doesn't matter.

What clearly matters is what we get out of our hobby, and what others do that we choose to show off. It get my enjoy seeing what others have done, what they build, and other projects that they work on. My own stuff when I run it, makes me marvel and dream. Also, can't wait to see your improved version(and hats off to Mr. Muffin as always). I really wanted to see what he would have down with his version of an L2a, but Lionel said no.

Graphite seems like the wrong color on the smokebox for the green Southern prototypes. It's more of a silver to my eye.

Also, while my interest in the Southern isn't all that high, I know for me collectability goes up if it's painted like the prototype.  After seeing the side by side w/ the Crescent Limited, there's no way I'd buy that 4-6-0 unless it was at a discount or had already been repainted.  The T&P doesn't stand a chance either!  The Southern at least could go on a shelf or be used on a Christmas layout.  The pastel T&P would need an immediate repaint or otherwise just stay in the box.

Southern smokebox front colors varied greatly from shop to shop and time period to time period.  The picture of the 1244 is definitely silver and is of the time period of regular service.  The 1401 picture is a grayish color not really either, post regular service headed to the Smithsonian.  4501 was definitely silver in its early excursion days.

As with any Southern Railway steam engine, all were somewhat unique, especially depending on what shop they came out of.

Only way to truly model a Southern steam engine correctly is have a picture of the engine you are modeling.

I'll do a few things and live with the rest.

Just received the name plates for the CP Railtours version from Lionel.  2 sets of names, some strong magnets and sticky tape in the package. No instructions, so I'm gonna guess, put the magnets on the inside of the tender shell, then simply put the name plates in place (carefully so as not to scratch the original markings).

Cut a strip of paper or some other material to put on the back of the plates.  Maybe a layer of scotch tape even.  That will help prevent the plate from scratching the paint.

Ordered the sou line from mr. Muffins the other day. He is sending it directly to harry hike at no charge to me to have the grey smokebox and such painted. Cost a little more than charley ro's price wise, but the extra 20 dollars was worth it to me not to have to hassle sending it to harry myself. Thanks again steve aka mr. Muffin for the great service. Cant wait to get this engine.

Steve, Liz, and Jeff just get it. A trip to Atlanta on a Saturday morning is a treat. Have a terrific breakfast at their cafe, visit the layout, and pickup your preorders. Good stuff.

Closing the loop on this one: I finally picked up my NKP ten wheeler (travel baseball kills my Saturday’s in the summer).  Steve and Harry teamed up to make these a home run. Here are a couple pics of it with a proper graphite smoke box and fire box.  It’s a night and day difference over the battleship gray/auto primer that came from the factory.

Here is a nose-to-nose shot of it with my Legacy NKP Mallet (one of my favorites).  The two look nearly identical in color and shade.

In the final analysis, these turned out great. I still can find no understanding as to why these color mistakes keep coming, but I’m grateful for the efforts of Steve to make them right. He put a ton of effort into this particular special run and they are fantastic once given a little extra love from Harry.
