Happy Friday everyone!

During this stressful time for everyone, I thought a thread of our fun/silly/fanciful things on our layouts would be great.

What I mean by silly/fun: it can be anything from alien, monsters, little people in amusing situations, non-scale figures, etc.

So let’s see what you guys have!

The closest I have ever gotten to "funny" or "silly" on a layout, has been making my interpretation of a Rosebowl/ThanksgivingDay-type parade, right down the middle of a village street. I felt the large figures you see used here were a fair (but likely silly? Fanciful?) representation of the huge floats which have characterized such parades thru the decades since I lived on the Upper Westside of Manhattan, right behind the Natural History Museum, where the floats get inflated early in the morning of the day of the parade, and everybody in the neighborhood, and plenty of tourists,

And yes, the parade needed a band and got a couple drummers (well, sort of,) some of which can be seen hereIMG_9449 paradealong with a Benz-limo with Santa and a few other characters aboard IMG_9469you will likely recognize, having a good ol' time of it...

I like it!

Here's an idea for a variation on that scene.

As I recall, when I originally saw that scene, even as a 7 or 8 year old I could tell that it was filmed by having them walk on a flat surface with the camera turned sideways.  (At the time, I had no idea how funny that show really was!)  So, lay the building on its back, so that they're walking on a level surface, and see how many visitors get the joke.

Bill T,

Run forest run!

Adriatic,

I am laughing way too hard at the PRR camelback

James,

I love it! You just gave me a great idea and it involves the Bud Iced Penguin… "doo-bee, doo-bee, doo"

Rob,

Most excellent! Where did you get those figures? I think my layout could benefit from the Caped Crusaders

briansilvermustang,

I see that I'm not the only one who has aliens invading his layout! haha!

I found them through eBay. They are Heroclix game pieces and are perfect for O gauge. You can find almost any super hero and their villain counterpart.  You will need to carefully remove the figures from their game base.  They can add some fun to your layout.

I was just searching an old portable hard-drive for pics for another thread and came across these pics.   My son was 8 (he's 18 now) when the pics were taken and he had lost all interest in trains except for military ones.  He also loved (and still does) all things Godzilla (chalk it up to being on the autistic spectrum).   I went down the basement one evening to relax after coming home from work only to find this on the layout:

100_1733100_1734

I don't have any pics (all lost when an old pc crashed) but over the years up to 2 yrs ago when I tore down my old layout, I'd periodically find a sniper on building roof, artillery barrel peeking out of a tunnel, or a parade of tanks running down main street.   Good memories!

Rob,

Thank you for the info!

Don,

They are cousins on the bigfoot's mother side!

Greg,

Love the vast collection of Godzilla figures. Him holding the subway car is perfect!

Dave,

I have not had scrapple in a long time, now I'm hungry!

Mitch,

I think you need to raise the height of the platform's room so Fortescue can have some shade too!

Brian,

I wont say his name (2 more times and we are in a world of trouble haha), but it looks superbly silly! Excellent!

It was a slow day in late 1949 when two shifter crews decided to play tug-a-war.  The B28, a USRA 0-6-0 design, seems like the best bet to win.  But the old A4, "Old 13", the largest production 0-4-0 made, still had some fight in it.

The firemen are ready to give the signal while a trackman will judge the winner.

Well, Old 13 won which surprised everyone but the big A5's crew.

After turning Old 13 to start work, the two crews waved at each other in a show of good sportsmanship.

I chose watching Frank play over my Thanksgiving dinners; he played unpublicized shows in Detroit ("to give thanks") I was always there. One time he peeled potatoes silently for an hour until the "idiots" boo-ed and left.  He said he just wanted to know who his friends were and proceeded to wipe the floor with our jaws. Much of Freak Out & Apostrophe got played,..and a short God/Hilliard imitation too (World's Greatest Sinner movie).

As Rob previously posted his Dynamic Duo, I decided that my layout needed them too!

The Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder are scaling the side of the building to capture The Penguin and his crooks.

I have added some “life” to my scene via a sound system which plays a Holiday themed clip from the 60s Batman Series (I plan on doing a review on this sound system in the near future). The last thing I need for this scene is Santa sticking his head out of the window (figure is currently in the post).

Lou, I don't know if you have hear of this system before: the EZ Sound Box (made by Invite by Voice LLC). Stumbled across it on the forum (before I made an account), I believe the thread had to do with adding sounds to a baseball field? That film was one of if not the best comedic films ever made.   They couldn't reproduce a film like that today as it would be sooooooooooo offensive to some folks and more importantly we don't have comic's of that caliber today to do the film.  Many are simply fakes and are terrible actors.

Thanks, Leroof, who gifted the alien to me, making the above scene possible. Arnold

That poor ballplayer never saw it coming. If your alien invader was placed near a small crowd, you should play this in the background!

Orson Welles really got a lot of people with this broadcast. From my understanding/research, people believed this from the looming war clouds in 1938 and the fact that some of audience came in after the show introduction. The Munich Agreement just happened and Nazi Germany was expanding its borders, many Americans watched Europe with worry. At the same time as Welles' show was on, the "Chase and Sanborn hour," played on a different station. After the first act on the "Chase and Sanborn Hour" ended, many tuned into "War of the Worlds" after the introduction which stated that this was all fiction. Some thought it was Aliens, others a German invasion, some even thought it was a natural disaster. My grandfather told me that a few locals in Grover's Mill shot at a water tower thinking it was an alien tripod machine.

Well friends, I am going to try some new pictures I "imagineered" as Mr. Disney would say.  Hope they give you a smile.

Here our astronauts have come home from a long space trip and they are Hungary!  So they decide to stop at Micky D's before going back to the NASA Space Center.  Trouble is, this guy is not sure he has the 15cents he needs for that burger, after all space suits don't have pockets!!

Well, this is different.  The Circus is coming to Small Town to close up their season.  When they arrive, they decide to demonstrate their new "Self Unloading" Giraffe Car ... every one gets themselves out, which shortens unload time and lowers labor costs.  OBTW, you can see we do have a disabled member of our Giraffe staff, but he is a trooper and handles himself just like the rest (using his self transport device).

Layout scenes featuring Godzilla or menacing dinosaurs may have borrowed images stored in imagination from scary monster movies. I created a relatively "tame" Dinosaur Park on my layout; one corral for adults, another corral for juveniles. Visitors to the park watch the animal keepers feed the beasts. I placed the Lionel Dinosaur Train Set on the siding that serves the Dino Park, with a limited edition LCCA DINOSAUR gondola added to that set.

My great-grandson Matthew is a "Dinosaur Kid," and he invented a story line for the attached photos -- the dinos are on board the train for traveling to their summer feeding grounds -- returning to their "home" in the park when the season changes.

The Dino Park is located at the corner of the layout near the entry door to the train room. It's the first scene youngsters see upon entering the room.

Well fellows, its been awhile since anyone posted to this thread but I have really liked the prior photos and scenes.. So I thought with Halloween approaching, I would go down to track side along the Leonardtown and Savannah and see if anything unusual was going on...and here is what I found:

This lovely couple, were celebrating their 250th wedding anniversary on Halloween weekend...decided to take a short trip away from home (Small Town Cemetery) to celebrate the occasion.  Luckily the don't get "out" often!

Some residents of Small Town were excited, it seems that Royalty was coming to visit over the Halloween weekend.  I captured this picture of "The Count" arriving at the Depot.

Halloween Count arriving

This picture captured the fact that some of the Halloween arrivals did interrupt the normal functions of the RR a small amount.  When I took this picture I  talked to the unloading crew foreman and he told me that they had decided to "unload this one ....later!"

However, all is not lost. The old adage is true: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Across the street from the Department 56 Diner is Yankee Stadium. An alien from another galaxy has landed in center field. Holy Cow as Phil Rizutto would say. This is a much greater emergency: a possible inter-galactic war!

James Bond, Odd Job, Goldfinger and Jaws have decided to team up against the alien. I can't wait to see what happens:

Check out this video showing a new addition to my layout:

Did you notice the two light blue Bronx Zoo cars at the end of the train?

OMG, I guess one of the giraffes didn't duck in time!

LOL, Arnold

PS: the car with the giraffe that still has its neck and head was a Christmas gift from my 32 year old son, David, a couple of years ago, which he got on e-bay for me. (David has a great sense of humor). I recently got the triggering mechanism and tell tale (love that expression) from a LHS. The Bronx Zoo car with the giraffe that has the missing neck and head came in a junk box of trains that a friend gave me 5 years ago.

These Bronx Zoo cars fit nicely into my layout with features of "The Put." The southern most stop on The Put was Sedgewick Avene near Yankee Stadium in The Bronx and the Polo Grounds in Manhattan.

Unknown, I bought it 27Apr15 on ebay. I suspect that it is scratch-built and is probably 17/64 scale; the driver is much too large, I think, as the only reference that I could find states 54" for the prototype. The one on the model scales out to over 100". Oddly, it has insulated two-rail pilot and trailing wheels, an un-insulated driver, wound-field motor, and third-rail pick-up rollers.

Jokes aside, the Transformers actually do blend in really well with regular O gauge vehicles in their vehicle modes, the only thing that gives away it's really a robot is the symbols.

Well I don't have any Silly things from around the layout today, but how about a "Silly Train Set"?  Found this several years ago on a bottom shelf of an antique store covered in dust...cost $5 , as I train collector I just could not resist.  Believe it or not, this battery powered set really does have a headlight and "choo choo" sound (awful!) and it runs on BLUE track.

Don, I have a very similar set but in the "Eggliner" scheme, I'll have to pull it out as Easter is fast approaching.

Wow! That building must be built well above code if it can support a transformer on it's roof!
That could be a good scavenger hunt idea: Find all of the transformers in vehicle mode and win a prize (candy, toy, etc)

Oscale Trains Lover :  "Eggliner" - now that's one I would like to see   Thanks for the comment, that Silly train set (SMURFS) after many years of taking up space in my storage cabinet went to my wife's antique booth and sold almost over night (also priced at $5) so I guess there are folks who just like the "blue people" .  But the kids and I had fun with it for awhile.

Depending on the size, you can fit at least 2 on the MTH premier TOFC cars. I even have a few that turn into planes that I like to place on the Lionel missile launcher cars as a "mobile launch ramp" type thing. The firing mechanism doesn't work in that form but it's still something cool for the public to see.

2637806B-97FD-432C-832B-001DCCA5137FThe other day while I was cleaning the layout  I Randomly grabbed Piggyback Pete and his truck he had fell out of his truck so I grabbed him and the truck and set them aside when I went to pick him and the truck back up this is what I saw and had to take a pic of it and post it here. Some how I sat them down this way.

I'm glad that you liked it Bryce, thanks for the input. Did you check out the earlier articles on the citizen of Warrenville while on the site?

As to the Monks, believe it or not, I got them at Hobby Lobby. I also purchased the Native Americans there.

John

John,

Yes! I have checked out all of your articles on the Warrenville website. I really like Nessie visiting the lake and Cape Warrenville.

Thank you for the info on the monks!

This is a fun topic, and I am enjoying all the posts.
Here’s a photo from our small 4’ x 4’ layout which has my first train set I got for Christmas in 1956 (Lionel 1615 loco and her work train) and a duplicate of the Lionel 520 electric motor and its cars that my little brother received. The layout mainly represents an 027 layout of the 1956 era.
Here, two workers pause while working on buried power cables near the rails as the 520 electric motor passes with its freight cars.

Don

Don,

I have not forgot! Here is one of my sets still sealed in the packaging! They came either with a purple engine and red caboose or are a clue engine and a green caboose. There are few floating around the internet....
