My wife worked for the IRS when I met her.  Back in, I think, 1988 she had to go to Hagerstown on a business trip and I went with her.  While she was at a meeting I took a ride around the city and saw smoke rising from a roundhouse to the side of the road I was on.  I stopped at the office and asked if I could go back and they said sure:

Ross Rowland sure had (and still HAS) some amazing steam... I believe that is reading 2101 steamed up after an overhaul, and I know that’s C&O J3 614. Ross still owns 614 and is eager to bring her to the active rails again, CSX permitting...

I might have a few if the standard for "best" is held low.  I have a couple more I really like but this is probably enough.

1. UP3985 moving 60 mph in Holden, MO.  Far as I know I'm the only one to photo UP steamers moving at night.

There was a tour to see the ongoing restoration of Santa Fe 2926 at the TCA convention in  Albuquerque , New Mexico.  The 2926 is a 4-8-4 Northern.  It was built by Baldwin in 1944 and was one of the last steam engines built for the Santa Fe.  It is also one of the largest Northerns ever built.  It is larger than the 3751 Santa Fe Northerns that are modeled all the time.  Lionel made a scale model of this engine a few years ago.   

The boiler needs to be pressure tested and the cylinders need to be installed.  The 2926 crew said that the engine should be ready to move on its own power later this year.  The boiler jacket and insulation will be installed after the pressure test.  They want to be able to see any leaks.  

The engine is being equipped to MU with diesels.  This is to enable the engineer to control a trailing diesel engine.  It and will have Positive Train Control so it can legally be operated on mainlines pulling passenger cars.  It will also have video screens in the cab and hidden cameras at the front to give the engineer a view of the track ahead.  

This restoration has taken 20 plus years and $3.5 million dollars plus countless volunteer hours.  Here are a few photos.  I plan to post many more on the Santa Fe post.  NH Joe

Like Ray, I also was engineer for a day at the Roaring Camp and Big Trees RR (Felton is near Santa Cruz, CA).  Two years ago this summer my wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and we took a bunch of friends and family to ride the train -- her gift to me was the engineer gig.  In my case, I was on the #7, a Lima-built Shay and once underway, I got to drive -- which meant that most of the time one hand was on the sander valve and one on the whistle cord.  Because the ride ascends a local mountain, there was some messin' with the Johnson bar.  I think the fireman worked harder than the engineer most of the time, controlling the boiler feedwater, oil injection into the firebox and opening the blow-down valves - pretty much constantly fussing with one of those things.

So here are my pix... The fellow with the oil can was the real engineer...

Nickel Plate Road 765 at Ashtabula on July 25th 2015. As part of Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam Program, the 765 pulled two excursions between Youngstown and Ashtabula. I do believe that Mr. Melvin was the engineer on this trip.

A photo I took back in June of 2013 when Detroit & Lima Northern RY #7 was on its third evening of test runs after its restoration to operation at Greenfield Village.  Prior to that year it had not run since the late 1920's when it was put on static display in Henry Ford's "Edison Institute" museum.

This photo was of the same locomotive and taken in November, 1921 when it was pulling a publicity train on Ford's newly renovated Detroit Toledo & Ironton.  #7 was the first locomotive put through the shops and updated to Ford's new and modern standards.  I purchased this photo several years ago on eBay.  It was a news photo that still had all the editors marks on it from when it was published.  I found it somewhat interesting that the smoke was blowing in the same direction relative to the locomotive and the rods were in the same position in both photos taken nearly 92 years apart.

Judging by the date Bob claims this was taken, this is more than likely not the 2101. These were taken in 1988; the 2101 hadn’t steamed for a decade at that point. With that being said, sister locomotive no. 2100 was also owned by Ross Rowland used as a parts engine for the 2101 during the American Freedom Train and Chessie Steam Special. After 2101’s incident, the 2100 was stored in this roundhouse: the former Western Maryland Hagerstown Roundhouse,

Therefore, I’m pretty sure this is Reading no. 2100’s first steam up since 1964. Coincidentally, the 2100 is currently under restoration in another roundhouse that once belonged to another CSX ancestor: the Baltimore and Ohio. This scene could be recreated in the very near future!

A bit late to the game but here are three of mine. The first a favorite of mine from when 765 was in Michigan on 1225's route while 1225 was down for a rebuild (2011 or 2012?) Taken during its turn around maneuvers in Alma.

Here is 464 at The Huckleberry Railroad around 2012 as well.

Finally, IRM's 1630 shortly after returning to service in 2014.

First two are film with a Nikon FM2. No filter here!  Last is with my Panasonic DMC LX7 which I was still learning at that point.

Doing this as made me realize I haven't done much photography and train chasing since then. Might have to do some more of that soon.

No pics of me driving the steamer, but this is me, last week driving an RS-3 at the Ely, NV RR Museum.  Great fun, I highly recommend it.  I have a new respect for gravity and grade crossings after running this and a 110 year old steam engine.  Neither slows down very fast.
