I've used them on some 1:20.3 live steamers and rolling stock.  They are rather a pain to use, requiring tweezers, etc., and if they're a pain in 1:20.3, I would imagine they'd be an even bigger pain in 1:48!  

 

In a live steam environment, they're fine as one generally does no switching of any kind, and once the train is coupled up, it remains that way until removed from the track.  However, if you plan to do any kind of switching, I would imagine they could become quite frustrating.  Additionally, absolute close access to the train would be required at any point where coupling/uncoupling might take place.

 

My suggestion would be to equip a couple of cars with them, try them out, and see whether or not they're something you want to live with before equipping an entire fleet.
