Howdy,

I was given a Lion Chief Pennsylvania Flyer locomotive that does not respond to the remote. I have checked to see that it is the correct remote and it has the right name and number. The batteries are new. When the locomotive is placed on the track and voltage is applied it makes what I call the typical idle clang banging sounds. Turn on the remote and the red LED is steady at the zero position. Turn the knob either CW or CCW and the LED flashes but nothing else happens. No whistle or bell sounds occur when the buttons are pressed. I see no binding of side rods and the remote feels "okay" and I believe no one has twisted the knob around crazy like. I watched the Lion Chief video from years back and it sounds like this baby may need a service shop. The video indicated there might be a couple of trouble shooting steps to determine whether it is a problem with the remote or the locomotive. Just call the Lionel number....... that was back a few years. I am waiting to get an e-mail from someone in service now. Thought I would post this question here. Any ideas and/or recommendation would be appreciated.

Thank for your time.

These engines use a single electronic control board. they control sound, radio etc.. most likely this board is damaged. You can purchase replacement boards from lionel for around $45.00. These engines are very easy to repair. 4 screws hold on the body and the board is held in a slot. Just unplug and replace.

Talked to the Lionel service folks via e-mail and then said to get a new remote. I can understand this as you have to know something is working and I didn't know that. With the return policy it isn't like you are going to be out all the money. The mailing back is a hassle but I needed to get this resolved. So I ordered a new remote and it solved the problem. So I'm a happy hobo camper along the main line.
