i fired up my LionChief Chessie unit this weekend and was greeted with smoke issues. I've had for over 1 yr. Worked fine until yesterday. After adding 6 drops and waiting about 10 minutes, I applied power (ZW-L at 18v) and it ran fine, but never produced visible smoke. I blew down the stack...nothing. After running it at a fairly high rage of speed for a few minutes, i stopped it and using the eyedropper supplied by Lionel on VL engines I "sucked out smoke." It was dense and filled the tube.  I also noted smoke seeping around the bottom of the boiler. So it appears the smoke unit gets hot and produces smoke, but maybe the fan isn't working?  if it is the fan, do I just replace the entire smoke unit or is it easier to just replace the fan or is there some other fix I'm not aware of???

thanks.

I opened up the chassis and smoke is being generated, but the fan is not moving. The wires are connected.  I've never opened a smoke unit before.

Sounds like a fan motor issue.  LC+ use a Legacy unit that has no components on the smoke unit except the element and fan motor.  So test fan motor.  If that is good and it is not wire related, I believe it is a board failure.   G

John, I pulled the chassis off and powered it up on my test bed. Got smoke but at speed the fan blade was not turning. Is that 'testing' the fan motor you suggested, or do I need to do something else?

If you remove the connector from the unit.  YOu can hit the fan motor terminals with a 9V battery and see if it spins.  G

I've enhanced the important part of George's comment!  I'm dealing with an engine that the fan motor was tested with a battery without unplugging it! OOPS!

Make sure the motor is isolated before applying external voltage.
