I have the 6-82173 lionchief plus NS GP20 which I run occasionally.  Recently I lent it to a neighbor to run and he commented that the horn had low volume.  I may not have noticed but he is correct, and I seem to have an odd combination with the sound volume: The bell and announcements are relatively louder than the horn. When adjusting using the remote, they all move up or down in the same relative volume. Is this the nature of the beast and I did not notice it in the past or is there an issue and solution to increase the horn volume? Thanks in advance for thoughts.

Early Lionchief RF based Lionchef Plus engines like this ONLY have master global volume control digitally either using the remote or if using the "hotspot" mode with the orange Universal remote, the Lionchief app also only shows master volume. You cannot make say horn different volume than bell o crew talk louder or quieter than other sounds.

That is just how the sounds are recorded and the limitations of the function of the sounds in these engine.

E33 Rectifier is the same basic board series and the same limitations (Lionchief Plus RF).

Instructions for included original remote:

With the engine powered and remote on and connected,

turn the speed dial to center on the remote to the middle or  "neutral"

Press and hold both the Horn and Bell buttons on the remote and observel the LED on the remote blinks- do not let up  on those 2 buttons.

The sound may become quieter once the LED on the remote blinks because middle (dial position) is possibly a lower volume than the previous setting. So now, again, with both bell and horn buttons depressed, turn the speed knob on the remote clockwise for louder. When you are finally at the volume you want- then release the horn and bell buttons. Caution, the speed dial might be at full now so do this adjustment with no obstructions on the track.

Note, if using the Universal orange remote, the volume adjustment instructions are different as is the way you activate the front and rear elecocouplers when compared side by side to the functionality of the original OEM blue remotes that came with the earlier Lionchief Plus RF (non-bluetooth ) engines.

The volume adjustment trigger is pressing the middle button for crew dialog and holding it until the engine makes a beep and then continue holding the middle screw talk button while turning the speed dial on the remote clockwise for louder. The engine will continue to make beeps as you turn the dial just so you know you are in volume adjustment mode. Releasing the middle crew talk button then locks in the new volume setting and you have to return the speed dial to middle neutral to again control engine speed.

Also, I mentioned it but the universal remote also uses the middle crew talk button as a "shift" button such that belll and horn buttons + shift (crew talk)  fires the elecrocoupler on a Lionchief Plus engine.  This is again different action than the original remote where rapid double tap of the bell o horn button was how you activated electrocouplers.

@Putnam Division and @Vernon Barry,

Thanks guys,  looks like I am not missing something.  I had used the remote that came with it to adjust the sound instead of the universal. The horn did become louder (as did everything) but it is still weak relative to the bell and announcements.  I will try the universal tonight to see if anything changes.  Thanks again for the help.

It's not going to get any louder.

This is how it works- a limitation of the recording levels they used for the sounds.

The universal remote or hotspot and the app still are not going to magically unlock a setting related to the horn volume only.

Again, this series of engine is limited to only global- all sounds getting universally louder or quieter. You cannot adjust crew talk quieter while expecting to be able to turn up horn. They are what they are. Horn is definitely weaker than bell or crew talk in the E33 Rectifier engine from the same basic timeframe and series.
