The O-54 minimum curve on the VL Niagara was a surprise. I wanted to get a steamer some day and this one sure is tempting.

The CCII Niagara was rated for 0-54.  I actually contacted Dave Olson via email and he confirmed the o-54 minimum.

The catalog also states this loco will have the kinematic drawbar. Hmmm, I wonder if its the S-3 chassis??

I remember when the first MR S-3 came out a forum member posted video of it negotiating o-42, although..... I wouldn't recommend it ............

Seems to run fine.

Okay, so here's a question. What is the difference between a 2-6-6-2 and a USRA 2-6-6-2? Somehow I imagine that the USRA version of a 2-6-6-2 would have smaller everything but I really would like to know. I did see the NYC USRA version which wasn't real. I did find a picture of No. 1936 2-6-6-2 which is an NE-2(I believe it said). Anyone please take me to school?

I'm not the expert here, heres a short quote from D500 regarding the NYC 2-6-6-2's from the "obscure locomotive thread".

D500 posted:

"This is actually prototypical, as the NYC did have some trackage that was fairly twisty, and needed some real power, but the big Mike and the Mohawk freighters were not comfortable there.

"It would also give us NYC fans who also like articulateds a chance to have it both ways, and for others something unusual in a road name that doesn't call Mallets to mind. And, it's a nice-looking machine."

"These should not actually be "obscure" - the NYC had over 60 2-6-6-2's, most of them like this one."

Comparing the photo of the prototype to Lionels USRA which is a N&W design or C&O ( I believe)

The NYC 2-6-6-2 might actually be shorter, the tender certainly appears shorter. The front cylinders are different and there are no classs lights on the smokebox.

Maybe if Lionel deleted the class lights it could be a "kinda.. sorta", something that a novice rivet counter like myself might  find acceptable on the layout. Of corse it would have to have a NYC whistle tone, instead of an N&W hooter.

Maybe resident NYC experts will chime in i.e, D500, Norton, Hotwater, etc.

Not really an expert but have thought if I could find the correct cylinders I might pop for this. I have no articulateds compound or otherwise. Neither Stevenson nor Precision Scale show anything close. Well maybe close but all of the D valve cylinders look like they are for smaller engines. Might have to check dimensions.

The fronts could be fabbed as they are just a collection of cylinders and cubes. The high pressure rear cylinders would be tougher without a CNC machine. Maybe a rounded section applied over the outside could be done.

For me the differences are too great to ignore. Too many concurrent projects now so will likely pass on it.

Anyone having download issue with this cat.  Goes so far and then stops.  Was using Opera as browser.

Switched to Chrome and all is well.

YES!!! failed with Firefox and Edge, finally went back to IE and got it. I swear it's the catalog viewer they use, I've had trouble for the last two years.

There might be a few more diesels in my future, can always use more of those. Maybe a couple cars, but my railroad is pretty full.

Hey Elliot,

I think it's must be more than that.    The moment it was released, I logged in and was able to view perfectly from my PC laptop running Firefox.   Then when I saw Jim's message about having trouble, I switched to Chrome on my PC.  I then went I tested it using Firefox and Chrome on my Macbook Pro.

I also did IE Exploder and Safari just to see.

In all cases I had zero problems seeing and downloading the catalog.

Even as I type this on my PC, I am looking at it on my Mac using Chrome.

Do you have a touch screen?  Cannot get catalog to work  at all with mouse (have touch screen) and it doesn't work right using the touch screen.

What is the final day to order "Built to Order" locomotives?

Andrew

Dealers may vary, but Charles Ro is taking preorders up til March 30th

Charles Ro website says "built to order (BTO)" items should be placed by March 8 as they have to place their order with Lionel by March 12.  "Early Buy" or pre-orders must be placed by March 30th.
