I was wondering how long it would be before this happened...

For everyone wondering, I checked...this ACTUALLY EXISTS. Lionel is re-releasing their fantastic Vision Challenger in this fantasy paint scheme. Not quite sure how I feel about it, kinda reminds me of the fantasy Hiawatha S-3 Northern Lionel released recently. It's definitely unique!

I wouldn't pay $300 for it.  It's that ugly.

It will go good with that Milwaukee S3 Hiawatha Circus engine.

The S-3 looked kind of neat, this just looks bad.

I agree. Hideous.

The Hiawatha S-3 Northern fantasy scheme didn’t bother me because it was clearly derived from paint schemes the Milwaukee Road featured on its streamlined Class A Atlantic in 1935 and F-7 Hudson in 1938. Those schemes came from an artist’s eye and were carefully considered as part of the railroad’s marketing.

This U.P. Challenger scheme is a hodge podge of paint unlike anything U.P. ever did, or would ever care to do. Ugh!

Um...

Although I agree, looks terrible on a Challenger.

No griping here.... I love that Lionel is stepping out of the box and creating fantasy schemes and high end Halloween trains. Others dont and that's cool, just as long as We all can have our fun.

I bought the Daylight AC9 and love it. This challenger is awesome! Not sure if I'm in yet. There's other stuff I'm excited for too. Rio grande Silver Aspen PA's with legacy, super bass B unit & all 3 units powered!!!

If the Missouri Pacific light Mountain #5307 looks like this.....

mopac 5307

than we have a winner......Bring on those Sunshine Special cars!!!!!!!!!

By the way the Frisco 1501 is a winner too. Looks just like the the one preserved in Missouri (Based on pictures of other light mountain I have seen on the web). Yes I want a 1522 as well but Lionel's model does not look like the 1522.

omg

Let's not forget the Halloween USRA Pacific from the last catalog. Sorry, not paying $1400 for a Halloween engine.

Halloween Pacific

I hope this group of fantasy paint schemes represents the minority of the catalog. Sure, they're neat, but some of them (especially the ones you showcased) are kind of bad-looking. In next year's catalog, I'll be expecting a NKP Berkshire in the blue and white scheme like on an NKP Alco PA.

Personally, I'm excited to see how the Brass Hybrid N&W Class K turns out. And the apparent possibility of seeing some Strasburg stuff in the catalog has me excited.

I weather a lot of my models but not the daylight AC9 or the 49er challenger if I get one.

Can’t say I like the colors, but the flowing lines of paint on the streamliner shows a sensible aesthetic. Not so for the Challenger, which is hardly inspired.

Looks like the 2019 stuff was removed. But I did happen to see 3 SCALE NYC bunk, tool and kitchen (sound) MOW cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it was a website oops then. Bunk car sounds great, hopefully the catalog gets uploaded soon so many of us can eye it up and get more details on what is truly there. I know I would love to see any of the old streamlined steamers as well as one of the green Southern steamers(missed out on the Crescent Limited).

I don't mind fantasy paint schemes, so do actually look pretty good, but the 49'er on the Challenger is pretty hard to take. Perhaps if they gave a complete side view maybe more of us would find it "okay", as the closeness of the color is dizzying. The one thing I could not ascertain from our short viewing time was whether they were coal or oil fired. I did read and there was no mention of real coal that I saw. Anyone see anything like that?

Well these will be tempting... A little modern though for me unfortunately.

but this is interesting...  Of course everyone will complain that it's for Fastrack.

Introduced in the 40s, the defect detector came along to take the place of station agents and alert on-board crew of dangerous defects on the train. As a train passes through, the IR beams can detect dragging equipment, gauge temperature, monitor speed and send a signal to the dispatcher and train crew that something is wrong. Now you can add the action to your layout realistically with this all new accessory! The new detector counts your axles and delivers an announcement after the train passes providing an axle count, approximate train speed and the occasional defect! Use the max/min switch to set a high or low frequency of problems. Every lap around your layout brings a new chance for excitement!

Features:

5" O Gauge FasTrack Section and building with the following features:
IR sensors detect and count the actual number of axles on a passing train and determines when track is clear
Calculates and relays by audio the number of axles, approx. speed, imaginary milepost information and reports defect detection status
Includes occasional defect announcements with warning sounds and announcements of imaginary car issues
Volume control and ON/OFF switch
Min/Max switch to adjust how often a defect is found
Gets power from track – can also be powered from accessory power supply (sold separately)

OH YEAH.

I wonder if i can tweak it for my railroad- just imagine -

ALLEGHENY FEDERATION DEFECT DETECTOR MILEPOST ONE NINE NO DEFECT NO DEFECT TOTAL AXLE ZERO NINE EIGHT END OF TRANSMISSION

that with an accompanying old cast nathan P01235 and sounds of banging over a diamond and i don't know what i would do with myself

Someone might as well paint a legacy 844 yellow or make a purple colored Amtrak dash 9 at this point. Looks like there is no Strasburg product in sight for this catalog.

No Strasburg so then I didn't really miss anything by not seeing this catalogue's offerings. For me personally, the absence of Strasburg items, especially a proto-locomotive makes ordering from this catalogue a non-starter. I can only hope that MTH's next catalogue will include a Strasburg item or two.

Can someone who saw the preview yesterday elaborate on what roadnames were offered in the challengers, 4-4-2s, mountains, and was there a K4 with E6 tender in the catalog.

Thanks

Challengers: UP greyhound, UP black, Rio grande black, rio grande green boiler, clinchfield, 49ers fantasy, & pilot. 4-4-2's we're several flavors of SP & UP, mountains NH & southern and some others I can't remember. Yes there is a k4 with E6 tender, it's part of a set. Also another long haul tender K4 with striping on the tender.

Me, too, but I bought the MTH version a couple of years ago. I wonder why it took both Lionel and MTH so long to produce a 42-year-old paint scheme that was among the best of the bicentennial engines of the period.

I have been pleading with and emailing Lionel for several years to produce the Burlington Northern SD40-2 #1876 Bicentennial paint scheme engine with no avail.   I thought that maybe it would finally show up in this catalog-but once again no dice.   3 BN SD40-2's but no Bicentennial scheme.   Come on Lionel  @Conrail6358 why not?    Lionel has already produced(back in 2011) the BN U30C #1776 Bicentennial scheme-been waiting 7 years for its mate.   These BN Bicentennial engines ,  U30C #1776,  SD40-2 #1876,  along with SDP40-2 were the only Bicentennial engines to actually pull the American Freedom Train by themselves from city to city when the #4449 was down for service.   Please Lionel,  reconsider producing the  BN #1876 in THIS catalog as who knows how many years before another run of SD40-2's are made.  Thanks

Nick
