I read more and more about a volume 2 catalog. I thought since the 2018 catalog included everything that was it for 2018.

Ryan Kunkle has been saying from the first catalog that there would be a second. I suspect it will be like previous Volume IIs with a rehash of Volume I, a few added items, and a preview for 2019.
On one of the Ryan and Dave shows they mentioned models like the H-10 have numerous possiblities with roadnames and the two tender styles. I suspect we"ll see the H-10 in new offerings.

Hey Rick, I no nothing about the history of the H-10, but really liked the model's features, size, and price point. Any idea what other road names are possible given the history of the prototype (I realize fantasy schemes could make the answer infinite)?
It would be cool to see some more Amtrak stuff like a metroliner or acs64. Or some NJt Arrow 3s or an ALP45DP

Well that is a disappointment. I was hoping the new Hybrid was going to be announced, some hints on the new vision line release and a possibly a couple of revitalized steam releases... like possibly another Challenger or PRR M1b?
Also, a few add on cars coming for my UP excursion set?
Well I've been known to look at the glass as being half full...

What's the disappointment? I said "I suspect". I imagine the Brass Hybrid announced. We don't know yet. It's all conjecture until tonight or August 20th.

Only if the headlight is in the correct location per road name unlike the ES44AC.
I do remember when Ryan visited TrainWorld in 2016(I believe), he was asked about Strasburg #90. His reply was he knew #90 well since he worked out there and it was something definitely on his list. I would say that it will come based on that, just a question of when since I don't think they have ever done an engine like that. If they do indeed do it, it will have to be perfect otherwise I would imagine Ryan would get the evil eye.
Whatever does come out will as most usually say, stuff from the other catalog with some new things here or there. I'm not sure what I would be looking for, though some would say Hudson. I think that we may get something that has been a while (I hope).

Agreed 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need more equipment of today!
I can't wait! Maybe more new subways or scale M7's 8's or the new M9's. I would love a re-run of the 2-10-4 Texas with cylinder steam and whistle steam.
And yeah, brass hybrid! Maybe it will be a beautiful passenger steamer.

If they make number 90, or any other Strasburg Steam, it will need a full-sized front end coupler.
I would love to see a rutland mogul that runs correctly right out of the box and not take a year to fix. Do you think that will in the new catalog?

I want to say there were many many Challengers. Fantasy paint schemes as I recall, and cabooses to match. They're coming back with the O27-ish auto loader cars, but the mid-90’s version, not the modern or postwar fame. Both O and S, but the S cars are really just O27 cars with S trucks. IMO, a rather ugly and uninspired BNSF 40’ Boxcar that I think was from Weaver molds. Sorry, I couldn’t really pay attention during the presentation. Too much talk about the new Frozen train set, a retail store in NC, Lionel kids furniture and fabric. I guess I was expecting some real sexy talk, but hey, there’s a $50 range O New Bright type line coming. HO track with magnet connectors. Lots of flashy sales catch words, but not a peep about how hard they’re trying to improve QC and the like.
I might take a D&H challenger, depending on msrp

Sorry, don’t remember. I think Rio Grande, SP Daylight.....plus others. I want to say there were six flavors. One of them in some gray/red scheme has a matching boxcar that I just remembered had cool looking lettering.
The new brass hybrid, a Norfolk & Western J, was announced at the LCCA meeting today. Pre order is up and running on the Lionel Store website. This is only offered through the Lionel Store website. Available in pilot and several painted N&W versions.
http://www.lionelstore.com/LEG...Hybrid-K2-Pilot-9999
Sales numbers of the initial hybrid met their expectations. (Spoke with Lionel's Sales Director).
They also mentioned a new Vision-line Challenger (mentioned in an earlier post by others). This will be the 2nd time the Challenger will be offered in the Vision-line series.

I would like to see that plus an accurate sound system. I have the H-9 from 2002, and it looks great, pulls great, but has a less than stellar sound system.
Today's Legacy has a far superior chuff system, but the H-10 should also have a banshee whistle if they really want somebody who already has the H-9 to buy the new engine. The whistle they put in the H-9 is far too deep, and destroys the effect.

I would only be interested in this if the headlight was mounted properly in the smokebox door. It was the most easily distinguishing D&H feature versus the other challengers.
I wouldn't hesitate for a second if a true D&H Challenger was produced. With a hint of European styling, it was most distinctive; headlight, stack, sleek boiler and tender. Anyone would be glad to have one on their roster. It would complete my steam bucket list so count me in on this one!

When do we get another vision line hudson? Specifically the 50th anniversary J3a. ( I'm convinced something must have happened to the tooling)
It would be Lionels best hudson ever. Great detail along with the VL whizz bang stuff.

One more time: Lionel never said there would be no Vol. 2 catalog in 2018.
What Lionel did say is that the Vol. 1 catalog would be all in one — no separate Christmas, ready to run, American Flyer or track and power catalogs as Lionel has done in the past. It was all in one catalog.
Any mention of the remainder of the American Freedom Train passenger cars? I really hope Lionel doesn't leave us hanging with half a set.

Lionel's H10 is really a model of an H9. Since I did not buy the earlier H9, I would prefer Lionel goes back to calling it an H9 with an H9 cab number.
Or better yet, Lionel produces a more accurate H10 by replacing the cow catcher with a footboard pilot and removes the snifters (those round valves where the steam pipes meet the cylinders). Add the banshee whistle and I'd add it to my buy list.
Surefire posted:Any mention of the remainder of the American Freedom Train passenger cars? I really hope Lionel doesn't leave us hanging with half a set.
There are a lot of us hoping we are not left with half a set. There are a few cars that could be done without too much effort, like the 2nd generator car and the storage cars. But the two showcase cars, four remaining crew cars, three 85' flatcars, and 85' tool car would be new tooling for Lionel. It would be nice to get some info from Lionel on what their plans are for these cars.
If they are making 40' trailers, why not make the 60's era 85' flat cars?

"Muddy tooling"? 700E? Don't be silly.
The J3a above - I have a couple - gorgeous - could reasonably be produced again, but, unless they bring it out in the "J3a 2.0" version (raised running boards/relocated power reverse and air reservoirs, Worthington FWH, PT-4 tender), I would not buy another.
It's not that I prefer version 2.0 - I love them both, but I lean a skosh to the as-built version, above - but I personally would not need another original, as the VL whizz-bangs are of no interest to me. So, new/modified tooling would be essential. Also, the "Selkirk" smokebox front would have to appear on some of them.

There's a fair amount of new stuff for 2019 (perhaps not new tooling, but nobody but Lionel is doing much new tooling these days in any case).
American Flyer U33s, many UP Challengers other than the fantasy scheme, Alco PAs, lots of Thomas stuff, lots of MOW cars, Light Mikados, all in multiple road names, for instance. Search under "new" and then look for the 2019 designation.
Matt Makens posted:Holy smokes, 2 grand for the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. Lionels is digging deep to not make new models
I agree. Hideous.
The Hiawatha S-3 Northern fantasy scheme didn’t bother me because it was clearly derived from paint schemes the Milwaukee Road featured on its streamlined Class A Atlantic in 1935 and F-7 Hudson in 1938. Those schemes came from an artist’s eye and were carefully considered as part of the railroad’s marketing.
This U.P. Challenger scheme is a hodge podge of paint unlike anything U.P. ever did, or would ever care to do. Ugh!
NOT pretty at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, remember that this soon to be out catalog would have repeats, we all should know that since it was stated somewhere around here. As for the VL Challenger, I'll think about the normal ones. I will have to see when the new catalog comes out, what exactly peaks my interest. I'm always interested in rolling stock, so, see what else would be coming.
What is an interest is how their shipping list seems to be all over the place. Some things that were supposed to be out in July, now are up in the air as evident with the dates moved to December. I know Ryan had said in one of the TW vids(I believe) that he was pushing to try and get the Niagara's in September. I believe that they are still listed for October since that was his original target quote as he said last October at the unavailing.
I did see the PA's, but I think I will pass on those because I'm a big steamhead. Well, see what comes in the V1 2019 catalog in February/March next year.
My eyes hurt looking at that thing. I prefer Freddie Krueger. How about a five stripe Challenger in tuscan? Wait . . . I have it . . . . a scale Hogwarts Challenger with Harry in the depleting Quiddich tender.
I just checked the online store an hour ago and saw that they have the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton 86' boxcars in blue, green, and pink.
Then they have to have O scale C&O Chessie gondolas, DT&I gondolas, EJ&E gondolas, and South Shore Gondolas.
I will have to spread out the gondolas over a few months.
Andrew
They have the Central Vermont RS-11 diesel locomotives in the final bright green and bright yellow scheme. There were CV GP9 diesel locos in that scheme operating on the Grand Trunk Western, so perhaps the CV RS-11 will be a substitute.
Andrew
I like many of Lionel's fantasy paint schemes (I was a big fan of the SP AC-9 in Daylight). But this new UP Challenger is...not attractive.

Well these will be tempting... A little modern though for me unfortunately.
but this is interesting... Of course everyone will complain that it's for Fastrack.
Introduced in the 40s, the defect detector came along to take the place of station agents and alert on-board crew of dangerous defects on the train. As a train passes through, the IR beams can detect dragging equipment, gauge temperature, monitor speed and send a signal to the dispatcher and train crew that something is wrong. Now you can add the action to your layout realistically with this all new accessory! The new detector counts your axles and delivers an announcement after the train passes providing an axle count, approximate train speed and the occasional defect! Use the max/min switch to set a high or low frequency of problems. Every lap around your layout brings a new chance for excitement!
Features:
5" O Gauge FasTrack Section and building with the following features:
IR sensors detect and count the actual number of axles on a passing train and determines when track is clear
Calculates and relays by audio the number of axles, approx. speed, imaginary milepost information and reports defect detection status
Includes occasional defect announcements with warning sounds and announcements of imaginary car issues
Volume control and ON/OFF switch
Min/Max switch to adjust how often a defect is found
Gets power from track – can also be powered from accessory power supply (sold separately)
Product Specifications:
Not that it helps any, but the aux water tender description sez it’s a “forty niner” ‘49er paint scheme. Seems to match the UP Challenger.

No griping here.... I love that Lionel is stepping out of the box and creating fantasy schemes and high end Halloween trains. Others dont and that's cool, just as long as We all can have our fun.
I bought the Daylight AC9 and love it. This challenger is awesome! Not sure if I'm in yet. There's other stuff I'm excited for too. Rio grande Silver Aspen PA's with legacy, super bass B unit & all 3 units powered!!!
imagine weathering both challenger and daylight AC9 and doubleheading them on the same freight train

omg
Let's not forget the Halloween USRA Pacific from the last catalog. Sorry, not paying $1400 for a Halloween engine.
I hope this group of fantasy paint schemes represents the minority of the catalog. Sure, they're neat, but some of them (especially the ones you showcased) are kind of bad-looking. In next year's catalog, I'll be expecting a NKP Berkshire in the blue and white scheme like on an NKP Alco PA.
Personally, I'm excited to see how the Brass Hybrid N&W Class K turns out. And the apparent possibility of seeing some Strasburg stuff in the catalog has me excited.

Looks like the 2019 stuff was removed. But I did happen to see 3 SCALE NYC bunk, tool and kitchen (sound) MOW cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes these are awesome! I'm probably gonna go for PRR.

I weather a lot of my models but not the daylight AC9 or the 49er challenger if I get one.
The defect detector unit looks interesting to me. The reefer sound cars looked pretty nice too.

I agree.
Ugh!
Um...
Although I agree, looks terrible on a Challenger.
Rusty
Can’t say I like the colors, but the flowing lines of paint on the streamliner shows a sensible aesthetic. Not so for the Challenger, which is hardly inspired.

Darned if I can remember that anyone asked you to buy the Halloween loc.
With luck, this beauty will be running on my layout in the Fall.
I might even post pix - and you still don't have to buy it.

I guess it was a website oops then. Bunk car sounds great, hopefully the catalog gets uploaded soon so many of us can eye it up and get more details on what is truly there. I know I would love to see any of the old streamlined steamers as well as one of the green Southern steamers(missed out on the Crescent Limited).
I don't mind fantasy paint schemes, so do actually look pretty good, but the 49'er on the Challenger is pretty hard to take. Perhaps if they gave a complete side view maybe more of us would find it "okay", as the closeness of the color is dizzying. The one thing I could not ascertain from our short viewing time was whether they were coal or oil fired. I did read and there was no mention of real coal that I saw. Anyone see anything like that?
Someone might as well paint a legacy 844 yellow or make a purple colored Amtrak dash 9 at this point. Looks like there is no Strasburg product in sight for this catalog.
