Truck replacement is the common solution. You can also keep the tinplate couplers as is and use the purpose built TT-100 or TS-162 adapters as applicable:

Jeff at The Train Tender has them for a couple bucks and they work fine. Read the page above to try and figure which height you'll need.

Dooh! Turns out the pre war coupler on 2224T tender  is broken. I need to do the swap out with a compatible postwar caboose  truck that has a pickup under it. 

Any suggestions or offerings from your parts bins appreciated.

I can't  use the TT-100 or TS 162, I can offer them to someone that needs them.

The tender in question uses the TT-36 truck. These are not super prevent, so it is worth taking a look at the TT-36 truck breakdown here as the parts you may need are more available separately.
