The idler gear on each of my 2343 motors has quite a bit of play so that it often 
pulls away from the body of the motor and as a result does not fully line up with the armature shaft gear (see photos). The loco runs well nonetheless. Why does this happen? Is it a problem? If so, how can it be fixed?

It may be that the stub axle could be pressed in further.
I'm not an expert on these. But you could definitely do harm by trying to press the axle or gear in further without the proper tools and techniques. If someone on the Form wants to share, I would be eager to learn what those are.
In the meantime, if the gears aren't moving so far that they come out of mesh then I personally wouldn't worry about it, or do anything to fix it. My $.02.
