I can't seem to tighten the drive rod on one of the front wheel.  The screw seems ok (not stripped) but maybe the receiving end is stripped.

 

If that is the case...what are my options?  Do they make a longerdrive rod screw that may work by going in deeper or do I have to replace the wheel which is something that I have never done.

 

If I need to replace the wheel, does anyone have a link to a video on how this is done?  I assume they are compressed on the engine and need to be pulled off with a tool that I do not have...

 

I appreciate your adivce and direction. I am trying to learn how to repair trains so please send me your thoughts.

Specialized tools are needed to remove and replace Lionel wheels properly.  And if you're just learning repairs, this wouldn't be the first repair I'd attempt, IMHO.  Of course, the most authentic fix is to replace the wheel.

 

If this were my engine, I think I'd put a dab of J.B Weld at the bottom of the screw hole, and on the tip of the screw, then insert the screw to the proper depth.  Maybe a tiny drop of oil on the inside of the drive rod and at the head end of the screw, so they don't accidentally get stuck.  I'll bet that J.B. Weld holds it.  If you're unfamiliar with the product, it's a special 2-part epoxy for use on metals and is available at the big box home improvement stores, hardware stores and auto parts stores.  Good luck!

 It sounds like the epoxy may keep the screw from coming out permanently. If you need a solution that will allow you to be able to remove the screw, try wrapping a few turns of teflon plumbing seal tape around the threads. Alternatively, a few drops of a threadlocker product may hold the screw in place, and allow you to remove it again in the future. Coating the threads with paint, or even nail polish may keep the screw in place if the threads in the wheel are not too worn.
