No, they cannot. Apparently, the magnetic cans will get jammed in the chute.

The 3662 has a modified piston/delivery system, compared to the earlier 027 style cars, that takes some of the harshness out of the action and thus, the magnetic cans weren't needed if the voltage is set correctly.

 

 

I have a 3662 and the Bosco version, the 3672.  What causes the right side door to close first when viewed from the front?  Recently my 3672 has developed a frequent pattern where the door on the left side has been closing first.  I thought the spring may be causing the problem but that doesn't seem to be it.   Also, I thought maybe the door arm where the spring sits might be dragging on the shute for the cans.  Does anyone know why the doors close in the proper sequence most of the time? 

The 3662 has a dash pot in it to slow the mechanism down. The seal in the dash pot is a semi fluid grease. With age and use this seal is lost and the operation speeds up.  To slow it back down the mechanism needs to be disassembled, cleaned and relubricated. There have been a number of posts on this process in the past with good advice in them. Finding the proper lubricant is usually the issue.  In the service manual Lionel discusses how to make the lubricant of the proper consistency using materials that are no longer available.
