I've found a number of excellent posts on this subject.  Dales us of relays seems most logical and cost effective for realistic operation.  TRAIN ELECTRICS, http://www.trainelectrics.com/...ay-instructions.html, has some similar diagrams and offers up their well priced relays, ie., MTR-12 Rely's.  

 

How does this diagram look for ease of use?  Good stuff?  Problematic?

MTR-12T/12VAC/DC, picture is below.  Price is $17.50/relay...more than Radio shack.  Train Electrics also has some nice pre-assembled gear such as a Bridge Rectifier wired to a Buss Unit for about 47.50.

Thanks Rick.  This seems pretty logical.  similar to dales excellent posts and diagrams. Perhaps a bit easier for those trying this 1st time.  

 

Stan...yes on shift key!  47.50 NOT 47.50.

I see Train Electrics also sells a MTR 24VAC.  I run a KW.  Would I blow up the 12?  sounds like they have great instructions and help if you call.

 

I light each signal of my bridge through a Marx two position reverse unit.

 

Essentially this is a single coil latching SPDT relay.  Every time it is cycled it switches to the opposite contact.

 

I fed the hot lead through the right finger of the reverse unit which is connected just as it came from Marx and pick up both the red and green bulb feeds through the rocker pivot contacts that would normally connect the brushes of a Marx locomotive.

 

I activate the reverse unit with an isolated outside rail when the train enters the signaled block and I activate it again with another third rail ground when the train leaves the block.

 

Two of these reverse units mounted under the table switch both 450 signal bridge light pairs.

All of the suggestions for insulted track sections and relays are great but here is a simple cost free approach that I took. I just  wired the red, green and power connections to nearby switches controlling the track sections in question. Works perfectly and the lamp color aligns with the color on your switch lanterns. I think it is a realistic approach as well because in actual railroad operation switches and their adjoining tracks would be controlled together.
