Hello everybody,
I am setting up my subject for 497 coal loader and everything works fine except I cannot get the coal car to dump. The power and ground shoes are fine and I don't see any disconnections or anything but it won't dump. Please advise what you think might be wrong and how to correct it. I did try other cars and they won't dump either.

Not sure which version you have, but the one that came out in the late 90s early 2000s I know had a wiring defect from the factory and the dump function didn't work. There is an addendum somewhere on the Internet or Lionels website on how to correctly rewire it to dump correctly. It's not a hard fix but you need to know how to solder and there's very little room or wire length to work with.

Make sure you are using the correct insert for the track you have. If you have the 027 insert the slide shoe is not making contact.
Yes, I am using the correct inserts. I still can't get anything to dump. The cars I'm using work fine on everything else as far as dumping is concerned. I got no idea what the heck is happening? Okay
Have you inspected the contacts in the controller?
Which car are you using?
I used a 34 59 and the later double dump one and neither one worked.
I will try cleaning the contacts when we get home as I am in North Carolina seeing our kids.

The sliding shoes on the 3459 are too far apart. It will not work. The 3469 has to be used with the 497. I have never tried the double bin car, but it is a long car and the sliding shoes may be too far apart on it also.
