I have replaced the AC motor with a can motor in my 6-18009 L3 #3000 NYC Mohawk and added an ERR Cruise Commander and Railsounds. I am in the process of replacing the stock smoke unit with a fan driven smoke unit that puffs in sync with the chuff sound. I ran into a problem right away when I wanted to remove the mechanical piston that will interfere with the new smoke unit. It seems locked in place. The picture shows how it is held in place. I tried to push the rod back out of the piston assembly but it is super tight. Not sure that is the correct way anyway and don't want to break anything. Has anyone done this? The screw on top of the bracket doesn't seem to have anything to do with the piston. It goes down into the chassis.

Aha! The second screw fooled me. I didn't see that the bracket was that large of a piece. Thanks, Doug!

You’re gonna want to get a couple things out of your way to add the fan smoke unit. …..it’ll make your life easier……as Doug noted, remove that Phillips head to get to your lever. Next, remove the 2 Phillips head screws that hold the cylinders to the chassis ( steam chest ) lift up slightly on the chest, and now you can remove the plastic down smoke manifold…..I also find it necessary to chop off the two lever towers that hold the lever in place …..some fan driven smoke units have the motor hanging down and when you attempt to adapt it to the Mohawk’s chassis, it can interfere with fitment…

Yes, I see those obstructions. I have a Royz Trains smoke unit and the motor does hang down. Thanks for the advice!

Yep, …I use the 18009 & 18064 platforms a lot,…when I prep them for whatever they’re being used in, I don’t even think about it, I just wash them off on the mill,…along with the old Pulmor mount….
