This engine positively will not respond, all of my other engines respond correctly (thus eliminating the wiring, remote, command brick question)

I do not have the instructions for this engine and neither does Lionel. Does anyone have instructions for this? I cannot find the program switch on the tender or the engine all that I have is smoke on or off slider on the locomotive. Thank you

That's the route I took.  Went to support, clicked on the owner's manual link, and entered the product number you posted.

I found it very easily. The step by step process is as follows:

Step 1, Enter http://www.lionel.com/ into your web browser.

Step 2, Click the "support" tab in the upper right corner of your screen.

Step 3, Click on the service documents tab on the middle right of your screen.

Step 4, Enter the product # into the search bar, (in this case 6-18071.)

Step 5, Click on the manual link that is displayed.

Step 6, Read the manual to find out what you need to know.

I hope this helped.

Yay! Thank you everyone for your help, Cole and I are having a blast! All good, having lots of fun with the SP and it is running great, its all "loosened" up now. I know that Harry Henning is really good with these, he straightened out 3 of the 18000 series engines and they now certainly "Pullmor" wow, seriously its ridiculous what they can do.

Now, on to the backstop.....yikes! By the way for $119 plus shipping there is a newer board replacement that makes this work perfectly according to Lionel has anyone tried this?

I just acquired a Lionel GS-4 Daylight (6-18071) and am now trying to get it operational for my kids...

I am having similar frustration with the CAB-1 remote.  I found this thread while looking for the owner’s manual and have followed all steps in the manual for resetting the locomotive.  Now I have it responding to throttle, direction, rear coupler, and head light (aux2).  But it will not respond to any of the Crew Talk, Tower Comm, or whistle commands from the CAB-1 remote.  The whistle responds to the whistle button on my Z4000 transformer and there is chuffing sounds so I know the Railsounds system is turned on...

Any advice?

i just bought this off eBay and want try everything I can to make it work before complaining to the seller.

Thanks!

What is involved in "re-seating" the boards?  If i were to take the current board loose, would it be worth the expense of upgrading the sound board to something more current with better sound quality or is that a lot of work?

Your locomotive was made prior to the modular boards, so there's nothing to re-seat.

Before we do anything else, do a "restore" on your locomotive using the procedure on Page 12 of your manual. Make sure you are using the "4" code.

If that doesn't fix things, it sounds like the RailSounds in the tender is not seeing the serial line in TMCC mode. To verify this, run your loco in TMCC mode. Does the sound system still respond to whistle and bell commands from your transformer while in TMCC mode?

Also, does the back-up light and rear coupler work in TMCC mode?

Lastly, does the tether between the locomotive and tender have all six pins intact?

I have attempted to do the "restore" process several times with this loco and then I did it with my other (newer) locomotive just to see what the result should be.  The GS-4 does not respond to the "restore" procedure laid out on page 12.

Running the loco in TMCC environment the railsounds whistle responds to the transformer but not the CAB-1 remote and there is no response from bell, CrewTalk, or TowerCom.

After completing the "restore" procedure I have gotten CAB-1 remote to control: throttle, brakes, boost, direction (with tender lights). headlight on/off. and the rear coupler.  So I believe my issue is in the RailSounds module within the tender.  The tether has all six pins (with one pin permanently in the loco plug).  Is there a simple way to test the tether with a voltmeter?

I don't know if I should be concerned about your comment saying the loco didn't respond to the restore procedure. I can understand the sound system not responding, as that's what we're trying to get working, but you should have seen a flickering headlight to indicate the loco was responding. Can you change the loco's ID # (NOT the same as the reset code) without a problem?

Now back to the original hypothesis that your tender's sound system is not receiving the serial commands from the locomotive. One of three things could be the cause: the LCRU2 board in the loco isn't sending the commands, the tether isn't carrying them to the tender, or the RS2.5 board in the tender is unable to receive the commands. Unfortunately, the LCRU2 board and RS2.5 board aren't that simple to test without having exact identical units to swap out, but you can check for continuity of the tether.

I've attached the wiring diagrams for both the loco and tender. I've marked the only tether wire that's involved - you've already proven the other ones are OK. Check for continuity of the brown tether wire in the locomotive to the purple tether wire in the tender, preferably at the points where they terminate into the boards.

If that tether wire looks good, then it's one of the boards at either end. A tech could troubleshoot the two boards to determine which is the problem, but there isn't an easy way to walk you through that part.

I hope this helps.

P.S. Note the tender wiring diagram shown below is wrong for hooking up the speaker. The open pin of that connector should be in the center. Your loco is likely wired correctly if you have any sound. I just didn't want you to go down a wrong path.

Try 740 as the reprogram code - see attached for procedure and code -

No. Again, this loco does NOT have a wireless tether. "4" is the correct restore/reprogram code.

Not 74 - 740 - I checked those locos listed and they have a tether - worth trying - it won't hurt anything - he can always do a 4 again

The 18056 and 18062 Hudsons mentioned for the 740 code most definitely have wireless tethers. The reason for the 740 versus the 74 is because these are the only two production locomotives to have the non-modular form of the AD20 board, used in 1997 only. The AD20 became modular with the advent of the other modular boards in later 1998, and that's when you start using the 74 code.

Since this Daylight loco doesn't have a wireless tether, and therefore doesn't have an AD20 board, the reset/restore code is a "4."

HALLELUJAH!!!

Thank you all for the fantastic advice!  After opening both the loco and tender up and inspecting the wiring I found a broken ground wire the tender.  Fixing this got the system to respond to the “restore” procedure correctly.

for the record (for anyone else who may need to restore their 6-18071) the correct restore code is “4”.

we are now fully operational!!

while the crew talk is not nearly as cool as our 2008 Lionel Lines Berkshire was (just sold that to finance the purchase of the GS-4 Daylight = my youngest’ FAVORITE loco ever) having fully functional is going to make him VERY HAPPY!!

Thanks, I mistakenly thought part 13 (harness) was the tether in tender parts diagram. I see the i.r. parts on the 3rd page.
