It’s a great looking set. Brought ours used and it would not reverse. Upgraded to Cruise Commander M and it runs very nicely. Stationsound car is great.

I replaced the smoke element and batting. Smoke is disappointing so next time I do a parts order to Lionel I will get a fan smoke unit and then one of Guns Super Chuffer units.

The MTH Dreyfusses are also fine engines. The last run with PS3 has an exquiste paint job. One thing MTH missed though are the roller bearing rods which all of them had. Lionel's Dreyfuss has them and is the only one of their J3s that do.

As for smoke, all the Lionel J3s share the same setup. That includes the two unstreamlined, ESE, and Dreyfuss.

This swap will get you 4 chuffs.

Add a fan smoke unit for 4 puffs.

Norton,

I see the 4-lobe cam; is this a part you made? A Lionel part? I have never had the loco apart. Obviously it goes on an axle - #1, I suppose - but could you enlighten me a bit as to the disassembly/assembly/new part process for this upgrade? I have mixed/swapped Boxpok/Scullin screw-on drivers on a plain Lionel J3 before, but I never thought about the cam accessibility.

2-chuffs are the only thing that annoys me about these J3's.

Thanks....

D, I started out with some 1/2" square stock and bored the hole and machined the corners until the diagonals equaled the major diameter of the 2 lobe stock cam. I never tried it with the puffer smoke unit which is driven off the same cam but it might work.

To swap cams the rods have to come off plus both front wheels. Not easy if they have never been off because the screws are loctited in.

The stock cam is not very tight and you will be able to drive the axle out. Then press the new cam in.

What takes the most time is centering the square stock in a 4 jaw chuck. Needless to say (I will say it anyway) the hole has to be centered or you will get uneven chuffs.

Thanks, Norton, uh, Pete. Great, another project...! But it's worth trying one day. Relatively straightforward, not to be confused with easy.

You are right about the driver screws - when I did a Boxpok/Scullin swap  couple of years back I almost messed up a screw head - but I managed to dodge that bullet.

Whoa!!!  Just ran into this!!!!  I'm looking for a 6-28084 Dreyfus at the moment... and, I have the 6-38000 ESE (with both Streamlined & PT tender) this will make my wife *very* happy ...as I don't *have* to upgrade to the ESE Legacy now.

Thanks!

Dennis;

I picked one up late last year from Grzyboski’s. It was new, in box from a large hoard they picked up somewhere. According to their website, they still have one. It is a beautiful engine, 2 chuffs not withstanding!!!

It might be easier to add Gunrunner Johns super chuffer. You'll get improved smoke and four chuffs without the need to manufacture a 4 lobe chuff cam.

The cam replaces the "chuff generator", not the "super chuffer".  You either need a lathe or a lot of patience to make the cam but if you have a lathe it only takes a few minutes to make and the cost is almost nothing. If you do not design or know of a design to drive the chuff input and fan motor then the Super Chuffer is your best option. The cam by itself will not give four puffs on this engine and requires a small additional circuit to do that.

Installing the cam on either of Lionel's streamline Hudsons will be more difficult than on the unsteamlined J3 because their wheels are pressed where the latter's wheels are held on with screws. Quartering skills needed on the Dreyfuss and ESE.

Tinkerers only need apply.

Thanks Ricko!  After reading the link you provided I have a few of other projects for GRJs Super Chuffer... including a 6-18056 J1-e and others.  I'll give the CAM(s) a go as I have a drill press, grinders, calipers, tap & dies, lathe and stock steel (including stainless) etc.  A fan driven smoke unit will indubitably follow.

Dennis, these come with fan driven smoke units but they are wired to run continuously when smoke is turned on. You can improve their output with a resistor and batting change but for 4 puffs another circuit is needed, either GRJ's, one published on this forum (puff and chuff) or your own.

I just checked and while the ESE comes with a fan smoke unit, the Dreyfuss still has a puffer unit like the unstreamlined J3 so a fan unit would be needed. Not sure if I used the one from the Niagara or ESE when I upgraded mine but either will fit.

You are on a roll!!!!
