Lionel 6-28316 PRR SD70ACe Sound Problem

Hello everyone, today I have a question regarding my newly acquired PRR Heritage SD70ACe from Lionel model number 6-28316. I'm having a issue with the sounds being very weak to hardly audible at all, sometimes the sounds will work fine but then cut out again. I have sent it to Lionel Customer service to get fixed, the technician replaced the R4LC board because it wasn't on all 24 pins and was shorting out and he test ran it for 2 hours and it ran fine with sounds. When I got it back it worked for a short period of about one or two days then the sounds were barely audible. I have opened the engine up to try to fix it myself but that didn't go so well. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

On that engine, look at this.  Follow the 3 wires from your volume pot and the two wires from your speaker.  They meet at a 5 pin Leoco connector that plugs into the motherboard.  Undo the motherboard and hit all 5 pins on the bottom of the motherboard with a hot solder iron.  Your problem is common with the modular board Legacy SD-70 locomotives.  When you put the body back on, the ID of the body is the same as the OD (width) of your modular boards.  Try to spread the body with your fingers while you lower the body back down.  If you tilt the boards inside with contact with the body, you may be back to having to try fitting it down again.

 

I am a huge fan of the newer RCMC board system.  We do not have to deal with that issue any more.  BTW, I am not knocking the Lionel SD-70 as I have several and think they are great running locomotives.  I can live with this quirk.

Bad Leoco plugs are the reason for many issues.  Anytime you see crazy situations like yours, unplug the Leoco (white plugs) plugs and plug them back in.  The same goes for steam locomotives.

 

I also have the Virginian with no issues.  My good friend Locolawyer has your engine and we have addressed the same issue.  I can not answer WHY but I do know the fix.   If you are good with an iron, here is what I do.  I take the wires out of the 5 pin Leoco connector and solder them directly to the motherboard.  Doing what I mentioned above works great I am a bug on never doing the same job twice.  I keep my engines so it does not bother me to solder to the motherboard.
