Good engines, yes; it is in my opinion an engineering marvel. It is one of, if not the best engine I have that operates on 031 & 022 track and switches. Mine did require some adjustments, but they were not difficult, and no special tools. One of my loops is 072,031,072 in each corner and one loop is all 031. I know it would look better on wider curves. To me it is amazing to see such a large engine run flawlessly on small curves. I used tips from this great forum as well as the article in CTT. I'll look up what issue if anyone is interested.

Back in the day I bought trains from Cap Wiley from Downtown Hobbies in Denver.  He would send you copies of Lionel's "J" sheets (wholesale prices).  You would add 15% and place your order.  I believe the cost of the 783 was $250.  I could be off though, memory and all.  But he included an exception for the Hudson.  Demand would easily exceed his allocation so the 15% wasn't valid for it.  I believe he wanted $400 to $450.

I bought  mine from Charles Ro in 1985 for $550.  It ran great right from the get go.  A few years ago, I had a mishap that pulled two of the connecting wires between engine and tender loose.  With the help of Forum member Rod Miller, I made the repair and it is back running great.  A very nice engine back in 1985.

Yes $550 was the pre-ordered price I paid from Charles Ro. Mine was delivered by UPS as COD to the house. When the UPS driver rang the doorbell, my mother only heard five fifty one. She went and got a $10 bill. The driver said sorry, its $551. Needless to say he had to come back to make a second delivery.

Great story!  Still running it, Rich?

I just bought one that didn't have sound or smoke (under $300) and I'm thinking about sending it to @harmonyards to do another can motor swap if he'll do it.

Yes still have it and runs great, never had to do anything other than normal lube oil and yes the sound of steam still working.

Recently purchased some newer Madison Cars to run behind it. Great engine you will not be sorry as a stock engine or an modified version from Pat.

I have all of the MPC semi scale Hudsons. The 783 and 784 run well but the 785 Grey is the best running of them all. Its due to the fact that when the 785 came out, the armature shaft had 2 slots for washers and bearings to secure to the motor housing. The 783 and 784 only have 1 slot in the armature for the bearing and washers and sometimes the armature shaft shifted.  The 785 is the fastest, that was until I changed out the armatures in the 783 and 784 with the 785 armatures, and they all run extremely smooth and faster!
