I have a 6420 work caboose with a searchlight. I can't get the light to work. It either doesn't work or it shorts out. It seems very sensitive. Can someone Describe how to get these to work. I have checked the bulb and it is good. Better yet, if someone has the repair manual page, I will be forever in your debt. My repair manual, (published by K-Line)doesn't have the 6420, only the 6419.

Thank You,

See Lionel Supplement 18:7-3 available on the Lionel website. It is a unique mechanism:

The searchlight post (2420-11) is hollow, insulated via a thin paper tube (2420-13) from an internal central "plunger" (2420-17) that touches the "L" shaped spring contact underneath (2420-18). This is insulated via the appropriate fibre insulators (CH-46) from both the frame and the screw. The "plunger" runs up into the bottom of the housing (2420-4), touching the normal contact on the back of the bulb (1402), with the circuit completed in the usual manner via the housing itself.
