Sorry for the late reply but I just came upon this thread. I had my #779 upgraded by Alex M with LEDs and including the ‘soo-pah chuffah’  

I just goes to show these 15-20 year old scale engines from Lionel are still solid performers, and with a few upgrades are right up there with the newest legacy engines in terms of visual appeal and most aspects of performance (but not all).  Especially when you can buy these scale engines in the $400-$750 range most times. 

Here’s the video from Alex’s workbench, I hope he does not mind me sharing. If you are thinking about having some work done, Alex is just the best and nicest person. I’d send every engine I had to him, but the site of a tractor trailer of trains backing into his driveway may give him some slight consternation.
