About a year ago I posted a thread re this accessory which needed a lot of TLC to make operable.

The most functional of the problems was the condition of the solenoid coil...

...clearly having most of its original coils missing.   I experimented adding additional coils of the #28awg enameled wire, but could never achieve success.

Fast forward...   We came across another #80 semaphore with an intact coil...

I can simply swap this part to (hopefully) make the original otherwise-restored semaphore to functionality.   Of course, that still leaves the second semaphore DOA.

Rather, my question du jour is...What do I need...material and measurements...to replicate the solenoid having the complete one in hand?

I measured the resistance of the coil...about 6.7 ohms.   But, how does that relate to how many windings I should apply?

I notice, also, that the intact solenoid has a paper layer between each layer of windings.  What is this paper?  Special or fairly common?  Where to find?

Of course, I can make some dimensional measurements for comparison of the parts in hand, but I'm not sure whether that's really useful in determining the number of windings.

I know, I know...Make the swap.   Get one good functional, cosmetically decent semaphore.  Sell the other for 'parts'.

I may end up doing that.  But for now, call it...'scratching the itch'.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Well, that part's pretty easy....100 feet.

Anything you can tell me about the paper between coil layers?  When I search DIY's for winding small solenoids it seems most are 1) not necessarily tightly wrapped coil-to-coil, and 2) not having any thin dielectric material (paper, plastic, et al) between coil layers.

However, there's definitely paper between layers in the latest #80 solenoid.  Even though the wire is enameled, what purpose does the thin dielectric between winding layers serve?  Extra precaution against short-circuiting layers?

Thanks again...

Perhaps the paper between layers makes for a smoother/flatter cylinder thereby making it easier to wind a tight coil?

Just thought I'd bring this item to closure...

IT WORKED!

Wife helped me.  Used a variable speed drill to both re-spool 100' of the 28awg wire and then wind it onto the accessory spool.  I used some pre-cut lengths of masking tape to wrap each of the 7-8 layers (lost count!).

After cleaning and re-painting/polishing all of the semaphore pieces, I re-assembled the unit.  Worked first time!...with gusto!!

And we celebrated!

Thanks for your help!!
