Well I know this will be discussed a lot on the highrail forum... but I think the announcement definitely deserves a topic on the 3RS part of the forum too. I am VERY excited about this announcement as it appears Lionel is attempting to offer a nice 3RS product. I will be ordering one without question.

What are others thoughts on the unexpected announcement?

To clarify this: You do not need to pay 100% now. When you complete the order process you will get an email that your preorder has gone through.  You will be charged the full amount when these locomotives ship - which we hope to be in late December.

Glad to see there is a lot of buzz around these, several have already been sold.  Thank you,

Ryan and the Lionel Team

Thanks for the update.  Perhaps a statement on the order page to this effect would be appropriate?

I'm happy to see Lionel enter another market, but it just causes me more fear that they will be permanently leaving my market and I will not be able to send them my money anymore.  As I've said in the other threads, I can't have brass in my house, too many kids playing with the trains.  And in no way will I not let them do so.  Can't get them in the hobby if I don't let them use them.

Lionel has had a serious lack of nice Legacy steam locomotives with O36 min radius.  Even more lack of ATSF in that category.  They need to take the LC+ steamer bodies and put Legacy guts in them.  I have yet to meet a kid that likes running LC locomotives, they hate that built-in safety delay.  They will if that's all there is, but they don't do it for long.  If I give them a Cab-1, or let them use the transformer throttle, then they'll run them a lot longer.

SINCLAIR, IF you have not seen this particular Well Designed Locomotive, It's my personal feelings that You Need Not Worry about your Grand Kids, It's Welded and made Well. The Really Neat Feature is it can be operated by The I-Phone, So, Your Grand Kids will have a Grand Time....It's a fun time in Our Hobby, and this is Locomotive will be a Great Heirloom to Leave for Your Family...I am excited to see Lionel go this Direction....Wow!  So, It's Legacy Controlled, and I-Phone Compatible. Let's have fun running our trains....I ordered the Sante Fe 3222 in Black...IMG_2179IMG_2177IMG_2178IMG_2201

Question if this model uses the dicast frame from the the legacy mikados why is the minimum radius for this engine 054? I have the legacy mikado and it does 036 curves and switches just fine.

Please remember that this is a "scale" model, and thus the tender is more closely coupled to the engine than most/many "toy train" steam models. Also, this is the 3RS (3-Rail SCALE) Forum, thus the modelers here generally have much larger curves and a more "scale oriented" layout.
