One feature addition I would like to see on the FT engines is a switch to set the engine to run the opposite direction from another engine to allow back to back operation without having to make any modifications to the engine wiring.  There are hobbyists who have no desire to open their engines for any reason.

Well, they should start by offering the FT in A-A sets with a dummy A. That Santa Fe would be of interest for a Christmas (and other times) layout, but not with just a single A!

I love that Legacy 4-8-4 that runs on o31 curves. It's nice that they offer a 34 inch long Legacy model that runs on tight curves.

I'm sure alot of the length is that large tender but really nice to have the option of an expensive high end model that will do o31.

It's longer than the Visionline Big Boy. Pretty cool.

Brad

Your comment may be tongue-in-cheek, but the 0-31 is a misprint. Note the Santa Fe Fast Fruit Express set with that engine shows a minimum curve of 0-54.

This is an excellent catalog. Good for me, not so much for my wallet. LOL!

I always like to think things over before placing my orders, but here is my current thinking.

1. PRR l1 - Not sure whether a want one with a long or short tender

2. Vision PRR N8 Cabin Car - not sure which one

3. One or two of the PRR N8 Cabin Cars

4. CNW, MSL and Wabash Grain Door Boxcars

5. Possibly one or both of the PRR GLa Hopper 2-packs and the Westmorland Coal GLa Hopper 2-pack

6. NYC E8s

At this point, I don’t want a dummy A unit.  A dummy B unit, maybe.  I want two powered engines for my existing Santa Fe Super Chief set.  I’m not excited by the new add-on box car but might get it after I have two powered engines to pull the baggage and six passenger cars I already own.

The Dreyfuss looks nice, but I'll pass; I lost interest as soon as I saw the "Wings of Angels" boxcars. There are more kid-and-family-friendly ways to show support for our armed forces. These cars are in poor taste in my opinion.

The more I run my Budwieser train, the better the Wings of Angel Cars look. Must be those Beer Train Goggles working

FWIW I think Lionel has, and continues, to build plenty of "proper" military themed items.

My wife just called the Wings of Angel cars “Sears catalog on wheels.”  They don’t appeal to me but they must sell well.

I like a few things, but nothing I have to have. I really like the North Pole central ft, but it needs matching passenger cars. If they are produced. I am in. I like the western md LionChief steamer, but i might like something nicer that’s  used a good bit more. Id love to have the twin e unit North Pole central and the scale passenger cars, but with the price and the amount of space it’d take it is out of the question. How did the es44s jump that much again? Thank god they did not make a cheesie one. I’m hoping they do a chessie sd70, (runs on o36), but at this rate 6 axle diesels will cross the $1k mark in a year or 2. Ok catalog, but there are a lot of things I’d buy at pre pandemic prices (brewery, egg nog stand etc.)

If the LC mikes were in either SR, SAL, L&N, or CofG I'd get one even though I think its overpriced.  RDC cars also tempting, but need them in Reading. Being a DC Comics fan, I might get the LexCorp hopper and hold out for locomotives in my roadnames in the next catalog. I do think they are making a good effort for us "sharp curves guys".

I enjoy traditional so I'll probably get the Texas Special set with all the add-on cars and the NYC FT. I already had a Dash 8 on preorder and it's in this catalog as well. I wish some of the sets didn't come with track and power supply but that's minor. However, I do wish they had a B unit add-on for the FT though. Lots of cool boxcars as well. Sorry for the single stream of consciousness.

The prices I see in the new Lionel catalog are way too high…it’s absurd.

The new Big Boy is $2900. I paid $1600 for a new JlC Legacy UP Big Boy in 2007, and it came with a free Legacy base and Cab-1.

$1600 in 2006 is almost $2400 in 2022, add in all the Vision features and it's really not that much more. My grandparents bought their first house for less than most cars cost today. Prices increase over time, plain and simple.

Am I the only one a bit miffed that there were no offerings to go with the Class As? Unless I missed something!

Norm, the only thing that was really offered was the Excursion set of 4 coaches in the 2022 V1 catalog. The only other thing that really isn't much would be the 2 pack of hoppers for N&W in the back. I had actually thought that they were going to do some lengthy hoppers, like maybe a few two packs, or heck, a set of six or something like that as offered in the past(unless that was a set of five). I think we got either the short end, or will have to piece something together. I know MTH has done hoppers in the past, but you got me on what, where and how to find.

I’m in for two Decapods at least. I was trying to decide which ones before the catalog stopped loading. Looks like they also got the N8 tooling.

I get kinda nervous when I read that Norm might buy a new Legacy engine straight out of the Lionel catalog. Its fun to watch him tear old engines apart on his YouTube channel and repair/upgrade them. What if he doesn’t feel like tearing apart and upgrading a brand-new Legacy? What a potential loss for The Arts in O Scale.

Definitely in for a Dreyfus and the passengers cars !

Hi Alex,

Dreyfus Hudson fans unite!

What if Golden Gate Depot had passenger cars from the 1938 20th Century Limited for sale?  And what if you were trying to decide whether to buy the GGD cars or the 20th Century Limited cars available in the 2023 Lionel Big Book catalog?  What might be some considerations that would make a difference in your decision?  Thanks.

Is the Budd car tooling old MTH tooling?  I think Lionel had their own, and this has smoke, but can't be sure...

Other than that, nothing really for the average Canadian buyer... (Lionchief style does not count when its a generic diesel...).  Probably will save up my money and try to locate an MTH Russian Decapod as some folks sell off their old ones for a new Lionel model...

The Santa Fe FT has not changed appearance-wise for years (the control system is heavily evolved). There are dummy A- and dummy B-units from earlier releases that go really well with them. They’re not as easy to find as they used to be, but they’re out there.

I've pre ordered the 5452 Hudson. I would have liked to have a different road number than 28084 but I strongly prefer the scullin drivers on the Dreyfuss (purely aesthetic preference, the smooth wheels complete the streamlining) and, picking only one, I prefered the regular tender over the PT tender. Charles Ro has the best deal on the 20th Century Limited cars that I can find but I cannot find a copy of their pre order policy online. When I check out it looks like I'm supposed to pay 100% up front, so I sent an email and am waiting to hear back.

I have often thought I would do a pre order but ended up not pulling the trigger several times, deciding on a "wait and see approach". I have also been disappointed I did not pre order several times and had to pay near full price. Not letting that happen this time, not with the Dreyfuss.

It's nice that you'll be able to get a set of matching passenger cars for the Dreyfus Hudson for those who can afford it, and scale sized too. Who's offering up a special run of CNJ RDCs? I'd still like to see them scale sized, but the features you get for under $400 makes it cheaper than adding the features to old ones...

I'd rather see RBMN RDCs...

CJ here is a quote from their 2022 price list:  "...There is no reason not to preorder - you get early buy pricing and we don’t charge your credit card until the items come into stock..."
