Mr Muffin is offering a custom run of the Russian Decapod in Western Maryland #1108. I have placed a pre-order and hope that he gets enough orders to get them made. I dont prefer the tethered draw bar but am glad to see a premium steamer in WM. I have the MTH WM #1107 and it is a great engine in PS 3.0. I hope that Lionel uses the same classification lights used by MTH for this model and not the larger bi-colored lamps.

Naw man imagine having to explain the big boy super set at 45 HUNDRED DOLLARS

Nelson Rockafeller probably looks at that thing and shudders

i imagine it'll play out like the end of home alone 2 where you'll be outside and your wife will see the order and go (insert name yell) YOU SPENT 45 HUNDRED DOLLARS ON A LIONEL TRAIN?! WE ARE DONE MISTER!!

Sadly, for me, the Super Set appeals because dead is dead.  My wife will kill me for buying the Vision Line Big Boy but I WILL buy the Vision Line Big Boy.  So, I'm dead already.

For me, this hobby is an illness.  Maybe it's not as bad as drinking, doing drugs, whoring or developing a gambling addiction but it IS a compulsion.  Since 2004, [I fell in love with model trains in the late 1960s] or so I have shown great restraint (in my own mind).  Unable to afford the first Vision Big Boy, I contented myself for many years with Pacific Fruit Express and Santa Fe Map and Slogan reefers.  I was rewarded with my first Vision-Line locomotive (the SP Daylight in 2020), I also added the Santa Fe Vision-line 3 pack with sound.  By all rights, I should have died then.  I still "need" a Vision PFE "3-Pack" with sound.

Stock cars?  I have Vision line NP Pig Palace "Pigs;"  Santa Fe Cattle, and, as of several months ago, a Santa Fe Horse Car.  Do I have SHEEP?  NO, I DO NOT.  SO, How can I justify buying a Big Boy, spending crazy $ and still buying more cars (which I know I would do)?  I can't.  SO, I can't buy the cars I NEED unless I buy the set.

If you remember the "dead is dead" part, you understand.

Finally, let me remind you that both Monty Python's "I'm not dead yet" scene and The Princess Bride's "There is a big difference between mostly dead and all dead" are works of fiction.  I have pre-ordered the Super Set and I expect to live out my days in happy anticipation.

Will the tender be gloss as well on the new 4014? It looks odd in the previous release with a matte tender and glossy locomotive.

Odd-looking indeed, although (you may already know) when the Big Boy was first revealed and run after its restoration, UP finished the engine but weren't able to finish the tender in time so they ran it with Challenger 3985's tender which was similar in design but not freshly painted like the 4014 engine.  So Lionel's model was accurate to the prototype for a specific window in time, odd in appearance as it was.

Both locomotive and tender will have gloss paint jobs

I ordered Mr.  Muffins NKP Camelback, NKP NW2, and the RI E8 set. Hope he gets enough orders for them to be produced. Especially the camelback since it’s an unusual loco for them (and they did acquire one).

I’m debating the big boy from Mr. Muffin as well. I want it, but I need to keep my train budget under control.

I have been on the fence about Mr. Muffins custom run NKP Camelback. I have been thinking the same thing about it being an unusual loco for the road.

After reading @Kieth Crook 020419 post on what he was ordering. It was enough for me to place the order today. Thanks for the motivation. Now lets hope Mr. Muffins gets enough orders to get his thing produced.

I'm a new poster. I'm an OGR and TCA member and of the Casey Jones chapter of the Memphis Model Railroaders. See our Facebook page, Casey Jones Hi-Railers and the MMR at https://www.memphismodelrailroaders.com/ if you would like. There were so many beautiful things in this catalog. Of course the Big Boys. I liked the elephant ear 4019 and the elephant ear Greyhound 4024. I was tempted to buy one of them but I have a Legacy 4012 from 2007 and I don't need to shell out $2400 for another Big Boy. Besides I entered the contest so why do I need to buy one when I'm getting one for free? The Dreyfus J3s? Wow! I wish I could buy the #5452 and associated cars! What a train!

I may have to come out of retirement and go back to work to pay for these things but I could not resist the beautiful E8s! First I preordered the #2333340 gorgeous Legacy NYC turquoise  E8 AA model. I just hope someday Lionel or MTH come out with a set of NYC passenger cars to go with it hopefully in 70' or 60" scale. Then, I'm not usually one for buying seasonal trains because I'm not rich and I can't invest much in trains that have a limited applicable display window, or that are too toy like and childish, usually. But after consideration it appeared to me that the #2333320 Legacy North Pole Central E8 AA and associated cars were unusual and exceptionally beautiful. The sounds of the locomotive and Stationsounds Diner should be a lot of fun. Finally I have a reason to depart from prototypical, or at least as prototypical as you can be with 3 rail, and use holiday scented smoke fluid. It's the first premium holiday set, I'm told, since the Polar Express Berkshire. And this may seem sacrilegious but I never cared for that movie.

Too bad the projected delivery date of these trains and most everything in the catalog is 12/31/23 and so the holidays will be missed but I think these things will be early sellouts so if you want it, get it while you can. Actually the shipping dates will probably be much later than that because that's how that goes.

I seem to be in the minority of people very excited to see a redo of the VL Big Boy since I’m fairly new to the hobby. Now I’m very torn between the 4019 and the Greyhound 4024 - I keep going back and forth!

I'm ordering the 4014 oil burner and 4024 plus all the passenger cars and yellow vision caboose and Mickey and Minnie handcar

So much product. So little for me. Probably the wind-up Disney Mickey Mouse handcar set. Nostalgia. Lots of goodies for folks today but Lionel has solidly moved away from this postwar guy. No complaints, though.

I appreciate your comment.  Lionel hung on to "USA-Made" for a long time.  So did I.  Tech was a game changer.  Swinging bells? Depleting coal loads?  There ware simply too many possibilities for amazing features for old-school Lionel guys to do without forever.  I started buying scale offerings and have not been disappointed.  My purchasing habits have changed.  I can't afford to do otherwise.  There are only a few locos and road names I will consider.  But the Big Boy is finally in the cards.

Glad I could convince you to order a truly unique camelback! I think it’ll be a cool addition to my, any your, fleet. 18 more to go!

It really is a cool engine for a road known for other motive power. Hope Steve (Mr Muffins) get enough orders to produce them. If not, I’ll ask Harry to paint one up for me.

I'll see Ryan at the Amherst Train Show and ask him about that. Could be a catalog error. Hard to believe Lionel would not include a wireless drawbar. Agree it would be a significant step backwards.

As promised, I spoke with Ryan yesterday at the Amherst Train Show. I was very pleased to hear from him that Lionel is using its standard Legacy wireless connectors on both its I1 Hippos and L1 Mikados. BTW, he also indicated that this is not the case with the Russian Decapods.

can someone ask ryan what motors are being used in the lionchief dash 8

and are they upgrading the motors for the Fast fright halloween set ?

i know the lionchief tier 4s before had many cases of motor failure

hopefully lionel has learned from those failures

Paigetrain,

Lionel has newer motors where the gear on the shaft no longer shreds itself.  Hopefully that is what they are using in production now.

As soon as I see one of those ET44s come in for repair, I know immediately what is wrong before I even read the label!

@paigetrain posted:

so the gear shreading itself is why those engines fail and not the motor itself?

I have seen failed motors too, but most of the time its been the gear.  The motors are pretty low end - would be nice if they used better.  Can't believe they are saving much $$$, versus all the warranty issues.

Here is a pic of the motor:

I've been thinking of pre ordering as well. I assume it's ex MTH tooling?

*edit* I pre-ordered but just got notification there's not enough pre-orders, so they probably won't be made.

Well, at near zero hour, I bit the bullet and pre-ordered the NPC E8 and cars. Although the E8s are not among my favorite diesels, the NPC color scheme is awesome, as are the cars of course (wish they were 6-wheeled trucks though). I still feel 21" passenger cars are too long, though I have the mainline curves to reduce some of that overhang. In the end, and being a fan of Lionel's scale Christmas trains, I couldn't resist. Paying for these and the I1s is another matter...likely will need to take out yet another credit card with extended low interest rate payment plan.

Ultimately, I only pre-ordered the NYC E8s. I went back and forth on the Dreyfuss and 20th Century Limited passenger cars the entire time, but in the end, decided it was too great of an expense for now. Although I am sure the complete set will be beautiful and a ton of fun to run. I'll catch it on YouTube in a year. Hope you ordered it @Chris1985.
