If you are starting with a blank slate you will need at the very least a switch and a cam to activate the switch plus a source of DC to drive the fan motor. If the cam is on one of the driver axles then the number of cam lobes will determine the number of puffs. Besides the mechanical cherry switch, there are optical sensors that will do the same thing but also require electronic circuits to drive the fan motor.
