I have 3 Lionel Early 90s Dash 8 40Cs they are:
NS  DASH 8-40C  DIESEL # 8689
NS   DASH 8-40C  DIESEL # 8688
CSX   DASH 8-40C   DIESEL # 7500
They all share a common problem. The transfer gears on the sides of the drive trucks are so sloppy that they do not always engage the axle gears. None of them has excessive run time and all have been lubed when in use but yet the plastic gears are so loose on the center pins they run on that they slop all over. Add to that the side movement of the axles and there you have it. No contact. Is this common? Seems to be and what if anything can be done to tighten them up?
 Thanks in advance, Kev.

The die cast tiny shaft that supports the gear wears rapidly. I used a piece of tubular brass rod with the ID the size of the tiny shaft. Cut it to length and use some CA glue to hold it to the shaft. Whatever the OD of the brass rod is,is what you will need to drill out the gear hole to. Jim Barrett has a video of this on the OGR video section. Perhaps the moderator can chime in and tell you how to find it. Good luck.

I wish some would chime is because I have not been able to find that link??

Thomas, even though they slop around they still run but they will not power one of the axles at times. So hard to know at first.
