"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

In looking through my father's collection, I found something that I always wanted to have out and running, and always remembered it as a kid: his Lionel HO Santa Fe passenger set, which he put together from the 0565 Alco FA, 0595 Alco FA dummy, and the illuminated cars 0712, 0713, 0714 and 0715.  I'll post a pic this weekend on here with the Weekend Photos thread, as this set is amazing - probably hardly ever run by my father, and look like they just came out of the hobby shop yesterday, still in their bright orange boxes!

The only snag is that the drive belts for the 0565 Alco have probably dried to bits and are long since gone inside the loco.  I put it on the track and the motor picks up power fine and runs really well, as well as the light working (the lights in all the passenger cars are in perfect shape, too!)

What can I use for the drive belts in the Alco?  I want to get her running and really enjoy this set!  It will join my other Santa Fe fleet in HO, and live up to my signature line!

I've been reading folks using small #10 size rubber bands from a dollar store or Walmart, but are there other options?

Unfortunately the Athearn rubber band drive belts of yore (p/n 90101) are no longer available....apparently.  Athearn (Horizon Distributors) shows this part number as "discontinued".   We (LHS) have one pack left....getting a little dingy around the edges.

Back in its heyday, the word was...'See your favorite orthodontist!'  Rubber bands of the small size used in the Athearn Hi-F drive were also used by 'molar molesters' to help get your teeth re-positioned.  And that's a fact, Jack!.....I had to put them flexible buggers on after every brushing for nearly two years.  Lots of fun trying to get them (one each side) hooked between the top & bottom contraptions of stainless steel bands and wires.

And, yes, they dry out, crumble, self-destruct, etc., with age.....just like the rest of us!
