Received my engine today. Even though not completely a"What If" engine as the KCS had 2-10-4's, just not these 2-10-4's. If I had a layout ready I would fire it up but it is not ready. After the T&P F units, the miss spelled Missouri Pacific Mountain, and the (2) J's that I am receiving soon with apparently the wrong color stripe, I am starting to understand the desire for the "Fantasy Paint Scheme". No colors to match - No Prototypes - No Worries!

Enjoy the pics. I think she looks nice.

Haha, you can't be snake-bit on this one.  Well, they did their best, bless their hearts.  And you're right . . . she's a good looker.

Except for the fact it's not a accurate model of a KCS 2-10-4...

However, I will state the model is attractively decorated.

They did mention that in the catalog, these clearly were not produced for rivet counters.

"What if other roads had followed the Pennsy's lead and ordered some new Super-Power 2-10-4s during the war? The CB&Q, Rio Grande and Southern schemes pictured here bring that scenario to life. The KCS actually did order some similar locomotives and while different in details from the prototypes, No. 905 certainly captures the spirit of these machines, especially with that great patriotic tender! Bessemer's big 2-10-4s came early, and most found a second career on the Messabe Range, lasting until 1961. These models, though different in details, represent the look of those heavy-haulers well."

I am not a rivet-counter (impossible in 3RO), but I am sure as h**l a rivet-estimator. The fact that Lionel indeed said, in plain English, that these items were representations and not accurate models, is a good thing.

"Rivet-counter" is a good thing. These are not toys. Without the RC's, everything would be, well, you know. And I would be spending not a cent on any of it.

A model does not have to be totally "right"; what it can't be is totally "wrong". (The ATSF 2-10-4 would have made a much better estimation of the KCS 2-10-4 - there is much resemblance. Problem is, Lionel has never made a model of the ATSF 2-10-4. MTH and 3rd Rail have, though. Some decal work and minor detail manipulation one one of those and the KCS big Limas would be better represented.)

At the link referenced in the above post (and here below), skip down to the bottom and click "photos," and then click "photos" again. Check out the first two photos of 2-8-8-0 No. 750. It shows a "conductor's cabin" on the top of the rear of the tender, and then what appears to be an entrance door for it at the bottom rear of the tender. Pretty neat. Never seen or heard of such a thing before. That would make a great model if Lionel would retool the back of their existing tender.
