I removed the dome cap for the whistle smoke reservoir on my Lionel Legacy Hudson cab number 5413 in order to add smoke fluid. When I removed the dome cover a small round meatal part remained attached to the magnet in the dome cap. see attached picture.

I cannot figure where this small metal part goes in the dome cap. The cap is not seating correctly, and whistle smoke is blowing out from under the dome in all directions instead of going straight up.  as before.

The instructions only tell you to remove the dome cap, but not how to put it back in place.

Thanks for your,

That's the metal peg that the magnet is supposed to stick too because magnets will not stick to the die cast shell.

There should be a recess in the shell under that removable dome that the peg fits into.

It probably just came unglued from the smoke fluid. You can clean the recess with some alcohol on a Q tip. Then put a drop of adhesive and replace the peg.

Rick and Marty,

I appreciate your help!

Here is a picture of the Hudson with the dome removed. The magnet is in the picture next to the dome. the metal peg is in the bowl. Looking at the top of engine where the dome goes it isn't clear to me exactly where the peg goes and where the magnet is supposed sit inside the dome.  sit on the dome. I am concerned that I might end up letting the peg fall into the smoke fluid reservoir hole if I am not careful. I will cover it with tape. Lionel NYC Legacy Hudson cab No 5413 pic 2IMG_7733 [002)

See attached picture.

Thanks,

Richard

Ok,

Thanks for the picture, it really helps.

Now one last dumb question:

one of the metal pins a is magnet, the other one in the blue pan is not a magnet. Does it matter which hole the magnet goes in?

Thanks,

Richard

Makes no never mind, get them to stick to the lid, as if they were oriented on the engine, and then put them back in their little holes the same way,…….you’re just completing the magnetic field so, really, only one magnet needed,…..kinda cheap on Lionel’s part, but it does work, so be it….
