Lionel Legacy UP SD70ACe and Legacy Sound

I pre-ordered the Southern GP30 #2594 from the last catalog after seeing it in person at TVRM, boy oh boy, that horn nearly makes me want to plug my ears. 

I've got the Veterans unit on preorder, the actual units sound different enough to me, I'm hoping Lionel sound department feels the same. 

Steve i have seen some newer legacy engines horn sounds better then some of the earlier models. I hope lionel does see that. I hear to many diesel horns lionel's just not prototype LOL.   

I did not say that Nick the earliers ones  are older and the some of the newest legacy horn sounds better.

I've been saying this for a while.  I love the NS SD70ACE Heritage engines but will not buy one because of the horn.  Some can be found for a hair above $300 and still won't sell.  The newer SD70ACE horn's are PATHETIC plain and simple.  Please Lionel pay attention.

Sure, but I believe this topic is specific to the SD70ACE.  Lionel had a great sounding SD70ACE horn but changed it for some reason and it seems like I'm far from the only who hates the new horn.

Man, I cannot agree more about the Lionel Southern GP30.  I am a huge Southern fan and was very excited to get this engine but hardly ever run it because I think the engine sounds and horn really stink.  

I have started looking for Legacy diesels that were made around 2008 - 2011 that still have engine specific announcements and the prime mover/horns sound so much better.

Lionel's offering of the UP SD70ACe, cab number 8444 has the BEST horn I have ever heard!  And to the best of my knowledge, it is the only engine that Lionel used that horn in.

I did preorder the NS Veterans SD60 but do not see myself ordering any new Lionel diesels beyond that.

I got a sd70 in 2010 6-28330 and another sd70 in 2012 6-38750 and the horns are the same. 

when did it change?

Don The horn that was used in the UP 8444 was also used in the CN 8002 sd70 in the coal set and the NS 1982 fantacy scheme heritage unit. Also the NS PRR 1854 has a similar horn but with a unique deeper tone. The CR NS heritage 1209 sd70 also has a unique higher pitched horn. Anything made from 2011 on has more or less the generic sounds.
